Unease welling up inside, you struggle to wade and swim away from the toy. Peering back, you’re mortified to see the otter casually walk upon the water’s surface. It’s gaining fast. You attempt to disrupt the water, but the pooltoy adeptly steadies itself. It looms above, then reaches for you.

Unnerving, but you have no reason to suspect the toy to be anything more than that. You motion to wade toward it, intent on squeezing past, but the toy starts to move. It waddles toward you with familiar, hollowed, rubbing sounds. Something about the toy is increasingly ominous. Your body backs up.

The figure stands on two thick, stubby legs attached to a large, pear-shaped body. Tapered arms with wide hands stretch nearly to the floor while idle at its sides. A toothy grin spreads across its visage as it stares at you with unblinking eyes. It barely fits in the hallway, just at water’s edge.

There are small ledges along the length of the walls, but they would be difficult to sidle along. You dip into the water until it reaches about chest height when you start to question your decision. You turn around and are greeted by a massive grey otter pooltoy quite literally blocking your path.

Like hollow vibrations of a large, vinyl pooltoy. Shifting and rubbing against itself. But every time you stop, it stops. You reach an exceptionally long hallway that is mostly submerged, as if a swimming pool was stretched thin. You can’t see the end of it. The hallway gently slopes into the water.

You’ve found yourself in a maze of lockers and showers. Every time you turn around you swear you catch glimpses of a large figure shifting out of view behind a corner. The constant sounds of dripping water and your own padded steps upon the wet floor are seemingly interrupted by something bigger.

Trying to circle around on foot lead to nowhere recognizable. Rooms upon rooms of strange pools, showers, and slides. And pooltoys. Lots of them. They waver immobile on the water’s surface, but you swear they’ve been watching you with unmoving eyes. You can’t shake the feeling of being followed.

It feels like it’s been hours since you swam through that weird tunnel near the pool’s deep end, thinking it some bizarre recreational addition to expand the facility. Wondering if you were going crazy when you couldn’t find the tunnel again after breaching the surface for air. Instead wandering.
