Of those in this small math class, a small percentage struggle with the elementary topics.
However, this has all been compressed to “10% of UCSD students can’t do simple algebra” — which is not true!

I don’t get why that key detail is so hard for them—they seem to genuinely believe they’re too smart for it?

Well yeah, if the remediation of dyslexic people is the exact opposite of your theory you have to pretend it doesn't exist

That's why they UK calls it "synthetic phonics";
in recognition of the fact that you're teasing out a normally subconscious process,
and teaching it in an explicit, synthetic, structured way.

Good readers, who saw lots and lots of books early and were interested in them, have already acquired IMPLICIT phonics in their heads.
They don't need to sound out because they're doing it subconsciously.
But readers who are struggling need to be taught the phonics EXPLICITLY, so they can get it.

Though for his specific point about "the evidence" he's actually right, but still stupidly wrong!
If you do observational research of NATURALLY GOOD READERS, they do a bunch of things that look like his method.
BUT THEY ARE A BAD MODEL OF WHAT STRUGGLING READERS NEED.

I see this shift among advocates for 'ungrading' a lot. The argument that grades should not be punitive and set the course of a student's entire life (which they typically don't really) eventually becomes "there should be no diagnostic testing at all because it might make the student feel bad."

"Years of observational research" is a classic, not least since no one cares how long you wasted on a bogus theory.
