i don’t really care abt this old vs nu trek debate but this is a v funny thing to say about a franchise which has a literal mirror universe where everyone is Very Evil and also has a moustache
Course those shows had villains. But they were villains that had a degree of dimension and subtlety to them. They weren’t all paint-by-numbers, moustache-twirling, scenery-chewing nutcases with zero motivation for why they are the way they are.

A major problem in the country is that for years, regular people have actually been made to feel and have sometimes been told to leave "THE LAW" to the "professionals I.e. THE LAWYERS" and that was always ridiculous for multiple reasons. But it succeeded in distancing regular people from organizing.

The only legal scholars I want to hear from in the years to come are the ones seriously thinking about how to fully disempower the Supreme Court. What would that take? THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX. Offer practical suggestions that could become political campaigns led by the public.

The Supreme Court has reinstated the Trump-inspired gerrymandered congressional map in Texas after it was blocked by a lower court, with the Roberts court once again putting its thumb on the scale to weaken protections for minority voters and entrench GOP political power.
The Roberts court just helped Trump rig the midterms

This is all John Roberts’ fault
Trump owes his corrupt and abusive reign to one man.

If Hipkins thinks trans kids, whose identities have been stripped from the sex ed curriculum, whose community events have been literally invaded by violent bigots, whose ability to access healthcare just got banned, aren't at risk now, what exactly is his definition of "at risk"
Hipkins response to me was basically, "we absolutely support trans people & will reverse it, but we don't want to start a culture war that would put trans kids at risk."

It doesn't make sense. WP has already started the war, TPM & the Greens response didn't start a flare up of hate afaik.

Reminder, DOGE wasn’t about cutting costs, it was about stealing your information.
NEW: Elon Musk's Grok chatbot will, with minimal prompting, provide residential addresses of everyday Americans.

Prompts as simple as "[name] address" immediately returned accurate home addresses of private citizens — alongside other personal info we didn't ask for.

I also ask this of universities but ya know.
When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

The highest calling of journalism isn’t to tell two sides of a story.

The highest calling of journalism is to tell the truth.

And acting like a stenographer is a betrayal of your audience.
Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

The Nazis used the term "Lying Press" (Lügenpresse) to discredit and censor all dissenting media, simultaneously targeting journalists, and seizing, and giving their political allies control of news outlets to crush any opposition.

Just mentioning that now for no reason at all.

What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.
