Jean Harlow and William Powell (still in costume for LIBELED LADY) attend the wedding of Powell’s stand-in, Warren ‘Doc’ Dearborn, to Edith Bresnahan on August 31, 1936. More on the blog: harlowheaven.wordpress.com/2023/12/20/a...

Jean Harlow photographed by Nickolas Muray, 1931. Harlow was barely twenty here; her youth is plainly visible underneath her heavy makeup and earrings, trademarks of her pre-MGM vamp era.

90 years ago in Harlow History, December 7, 1933: Harlow and her mother attend Hal Roach’s 20th anniversary banquet at his studio in Culver City, which was conveniently located just a hop and a skip from MGM—funnily enough, she was on suspension here. (Thread)

Meant to share this letter from my collection written by one of Harlow’s secretaries, Maydelle Jewell, while the actress was recuperating from appendicitis in October 1933. Signed October 25, just five days before Harlow was released from Good Samaritan.

Profiled an accessory from Jean Harlow’s 1935 fall wardrobe, the ‘halo hat’, on the blog, as I don’t get along with character limits: harlowheaven.wordpress.com/2023/11/08/h...

Posting this on the blog, as I’m finding myself increasingly fed up with the state of social media in 2023. Character limits and other restrictions aside, posting on Instagram or “X” to provide ...

The only Halloween-themed photo of Jean Harlow I know, unfortunately—this pose, featuring a superimposed spooky cat, circa 1932 (probably taken late summer). Brings me great joy as a black cat owner.

Jean Harlow in a fitting fall fashion photoshoot taken by Ted Allan 87 years ago in October 1936. I really love her face in this portrait; what a radiant, sunny smile. (Thread)

Wishing you a warm and comfy autumn (or a cool one, depending on where in the world you are) with these fitting portraits of Jean Harlow—wearing a white fur wrap from her personal wardrobe in George Hurrell publicity photos for RIFFRAFF (1936).

89 years ago today, September 17, 1934: Jean Harlow and William Powell attend the premiere of Max Reinhardt’s brilliant stage production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Hollywood Bowl on Highland Avenue. They’re seen here in their assigned box in the amphitheater.

This portrait is grainy enough that it looks like it was taken with a Fisher-Price camera, but it’s a rare pose from a demure Ted Allan photoshoot taken in March of 1936 for SUZY publicity, so I’ll still share it.

In late 1935, Jean Harlow was quoted in a (fairly rare) interview on what life would be like had she been born a man. On the blog, I examine the circumstances in Harlow’s life at the time of publication, and the influence they had on her convictions. harlowheaven.wordpress.com/2023/08/24/j...
Jean Harlow a Feminist!
To start: long time, no see. To put it lightly, I've been through the wringer a lot over the past year---health difficulties, death, and heavy work schedules aside, I had to set aside time to rest, gr...

Jean Harlow and Mae Clarke in a scene from THREE WISE GIRLS (1932), one undersung project Harlow was assigned at Columbia over the fall of 1931—longtime followers from other apps know how much I love to wax eloquent about this hidden gem of hers.

An angelic HELL’S ANGELS publicity portrait of Jean Harlow, taken in late 1929. Scanned out of one magazine or other I own; I managed to go through all the effort of scanning without making a note of the context. Go me!

From my collection: a rare bedside portrait of Jean Harlow taken by Clarence Sinclair Bull in her majestic Club View Drive bedroom, spring 1932. I’m a big fan of the incredibly Harlowesque fur-trimmed robe—is that ermine?

Myrna Loy, born 118 years ago, played an enemy to Harlow in both of the two films they made together—WIFE VS. SECRETARY and LIBELED LADY, both 1936. Harlow and Loy are shown here in publicity for the former in late 1935—unfortunately, some of the only photos I know of them without Gable between. 😁

While reorganizing Harlow photos I was reminded of this particularly charming shot of Harlow with her makeup caddy taken on the set of SUZY (1936). She sure is wielding that comb—and rocking the lace cuffs on this Dolly Tree gown that was meant to appear Edwardian, but is still decidedly thirties.

Jean Harlow as “Whitey” in a pensive still from WIFE VS. SECRETARY (1936), from a scene filmed over the winter of 1935-6. Nod of appreciation for this dignified yet practical Dolly Tree gown that suits Harlow’s secretarial role perfectly.
