The idea of QFT was already around, of course, but Dirac and others had thought of the electron field ψ as a "relativistic wave function," not as a field to be quantized. It was Pauli & Weisskopf who set things straight once and for all.

Apart from anything else, this just sounds like such a soul-crushing way to approach education.

Are you sure this wasn’t just a very pleasant dream? Maybe I need to find new parties to go to.

I’m more and more jealous of people who got to go to this conference as the photos get posted. Looks so fun!

When I was at Perimeter I used to go to Chabad in Waterloo, and it was my first up close look at orthodox life. It definitely is not for me, but I understood the appeal!

Anyway I'm hoping that in a week or two I'll be convinced that structuralism is the proper way to understand quantum mechanics (a state takes its meaning by by virtue of not being any of the other possible states is actually kind of true I think).

and the wolf and the witch that doesn't show up in the story but could have stand in a paradigmatic relation to each other. And part of the meaning of the wolf is that it is not a witch (or sorcerer, or fairy, or...).

But I saw a review of it that laments the fact the book doesn't address structural analyses of folklore, and I think I actually kind of know what that could mean. If you have a story where a child meets a wolf in a forest, the wolf and the forest stand in a syntagmatic relation to each other,

Right now he's building up the "linguistic model" of Saussure where words take meanings from their syntagmatic (basically which words can appear in what relations to each other) and paradigmatic (what words could substitute for each other w/o violating syntagmatic rules) relations to other words.

"That's a creative and original idea -- deep frying your turkey right out of the freezer can be a fun way to really get the party going!"

I don't know about you but the way my brain works is by analyzing the contents of the entire internet to make an educated guess about what word I should use next.
