A lot of new audience-building efforts focus on programming or promotions.
But the biggest barrier might be the experience itself.
If the first visit makes them feel out of place or underinformed, they won’t come back. No matter how good the art is.

In the nonprofit world, competition is often a necessity—especially for funding. But when our missions and values align, collaboration serves the greater good.We don’t all need to rise alone. And we don’t all benefit when others sink.

A mission statement isn’t just a description.
It’s a declaration—of purpose and impact.
But here’s where so many arts orgs get stuck:
They describe what they do... and stop there.
What’s missing is the why—and the impact of success.

But here’s the problem: most of the public hasn’t shared that experience. They haven’t seen what you’ve seen or felt what you’ve felt.

“When you know the notes to sing, you can sing most anything.”
Same goes for impact.

If people don’t understand the impact of your work, they won’t support it or sing its praises.

🧵 Inspired by reading @thomaslfriedman.bsky.social: When I say that people aren’t looking at the conflict between Israel and Gaza with nuance, I don’t just mean one group—I mean all sides.

This is not leadership.
This is not strategic.
This doesn’t balance the budget or make us safe.
This does not make America great.

If you think this national security breach is no big deal, that the journalist unwittingly added to the text thread is to blame, and that downplaying the incident isn’t an example of Olympic caliber hypocrisy…. then you are definitely in a cult. 👊🇺🇸🔥

She's got the best in the business fixing her up, so she's in good hands!

Real leadership understands the true value of the arts goes beyond the tangible. It’s about the ways a vibrant arts community brings us together, inspires fresh perspectives, and helps us express—and reflect on—what we feel.

An effective nonprofit brand starts with your mission—it should drive everything. Too often, nonprofits settle for unprofessional logos and hard-to-navigate websites, weakening their connection with audiences, donors, and supporters.
