Having been very lazy last year, this is a thread of my attempts to go to in person entertainment things in 2025...

Continuing the theme of watching bands I should have seen decades ago, tonight Idlewild. All it took was an early show at a venue within walking distance. I really need to revisit the back catalogue.

Daði Freyr said that we were either going to have a good time or a bad time, but not medium time. Always fun and uplifting to watch. And love how he's created a surreal creative career out of going viral.

My tip is to go through the process to pretend to leave and they may offer to give you another year at the discounted rate.

No! Recovering from walking too much over the weekend. Did you go?

Went all the way to Paris to look at some bowls.
A circular body of water with lots of white bowls floating on top. This is set in an impressive concrete round space with old painted dome at the top.

All while wearing a cork hat I hope? :p

Glad to have provided a break from the terrible news generally (or maybe the news isn't so gloomy in the southern hemisphere?)

Glad I spent today looking at buildings rather than my phone.
Inside of Notre Dame cathedral at kicking out time. On the right, blurry people heading for the exit. In the middle, some people sat still in the chairs.

And the latest Panic World too. I can barely follow it and not looking forward to trying to explain this to more offline family members. pca.st/oqrtl03v

Love that this trip seems to be bookended by two very long boat rides at either end. It makes the 200 hour journey seem more comfortable!

Didn't anticipate learning what United Kingdom is in Danish this morning, but it looks like a trip to Copenhagen in Dec for a certain show....
jellybeanzzz.bsky.social
My experience from going to Copenhagen last year is that sadly we are creeping up in price. Though sitting in a beer garden somewhere in Europe is usually more appealing than one in London, not least for the range of options.

Sitting by the London Bridge organ. Fun listening to people trying it out. But the best so far is the toddler whose random key pressing was actually a bit like the Prom I saw on Tuesday. Not so much fun, the current guy who stared someone out who was already on it to get to it to practice hymns.

Adding to this, it was fascinating to see the mechanics behind the piece. The different moments when the musicians had time to sneak off stage and rest. They also had the music displayed, and to see the accuracy of the time stamps for each bit. #maxrichter

This is a really good thread about the whole experience.

Last night, I went to sleep. Wait, let me rephrase that. Last night, I went to Sleep. Specifically, an eight-hour, overnight performance of Sleep by Max Richter. One of the strangest and best bits of performance I've ever seen. A thread?
Alexandra Palace, with a small circular stage, and hundreds of beds in the background.
jellybeanzzz.bsky.social
Didn't think I would ever see @maxrichtermusic.bsky.social perform all 8 hours of Sleep live nor that I'd spend a night at Ally Pally.

So many magical moments, at 2.30am when most were asleep, 4.30am as the music changed and 5.30am as daylight started to creep into the room and the music.
In the background, a round stained glass window with weak daylight coming through. On the right, a small group of musicians are playing on stage under lights. In the foreground, audience members in bed or standing up, as silhouettes.

Fifth and final #bbcproms of the year. Didn't expect to hear an orchestra mimic a variety of bird calls and other animals noises. Nor an organist playing as many keys as he can by spreading his arms across the keyboard.
Side view of the orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, with an organist about to play behind them.

Not a fan of this song usually, but the whistling and humming version evening, turning into a gentle hum around the room was quite magical.

4th #bbcproms of the season and best yet. Knew anything with Pekka Kuusisto would take us on a journey. In the first half, listening to songs in Ume Sámi mixed with classical repertoire (the Caroline Shaw was great). Then Shostakovich from memory (again!) w amazing interaction between the players.
An orchestra from behind taking in the applause. They are wearing varieties of Norwegian tartan, kilts and shorts. An orchestra from behind, listening attentively to Katarina Barruk, who is wearing an amazing silver cape.

Another one that I've guessed in one without having been there! (Yesterday's was close too I nearly guessed it as my first go)

They missed a trick not putting Franz Ferdinand and Sparks on the same day (though they are probably trying to spread the main acts around). No Oxford connection that I can see in this line up, but Puuluup are half of the Estonian entry from Eurovision last year.

Not sure if I've ever been to the first night of a play before. The draw for venturing to West London to see Interview was Robert Sean Leonard. Some bits of the story wasn't convincing, but utlimately it's a story about power and the shifting of power to social media.
Curtain Call for Interview the play.

It is! And only one game a day, so isn't a complete time sink!
