Very much enjoying @heddamorch.bsky.social's guide to non-physicalist theories of consciousness. Phenomenally clear, ideal for teaching, and you can Russell up a free PDF copy at www.cambridge.org/core/element...

In conversation with my students about what-it’s-likeness just now, one thought there could be something it’s like to be a rock even if it was “like nothing.” I asked them whether these two sentences (A) and (B) seemed meaningful and distinct to them. What do you think?

Hadn’t seen this illusion before, this is a cool one, how/why does it work though?

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

Here are some of my planned changes for next term to hopefully help with learning in this LLM era (feedback welcome):

1. Prioritize in person where possible!
2. Trial video assignments & discussion boards in OA
3. Require all written assignments to be done on OneDrive

What are others doing?

I was drawn to it initially for 2 reasons, one being the openness of the questioning-space and the other being that reading it just seemed to… “make sense” - and when it doesn’t, making sense of it seems productive, valuable

It's world philosophy day, so post your favorite thing about philosophy.

Mine is that philosophy has never had disciplinary boundaries. Every other field has always been within our purview. Anyone who tells you different has to ignore millennia of examples.
