Z, 9.75yo: hmmm. Well really it depends on how you roll it up. If it’s rolled into a cylinder shape then it’s not flat. Bc it’s round and doesn’t hold its shape. But if you like fold it up in more rectangles then it’s still flat.

Z: let me show you with a piece of paper so you know what I mean.

A few in-process photos:

Found a downloadable template on Esty, printed it off for a prototype build with computer paper and assembled. Realized it was too large for the kiddo. Took some measurements, printed off at 89% scale. Glued to cereal boxes, cut out, and assembled again.

The calming cardboard folding and taping moment I needed in this *gestures to the world*

The kiddo wanted a dragon mask to add to her Halloween costume this year. I found a template and started assembling.

Some fun mathematical thinking went into this build.

I’m not on here much these days.

But it felt like a good time to pop in and say: it’s double poke season y’all. Flu +Covid 💉💉

You can schedule your shots now in a lot of states. They didn’t ask about pre-existing conditions (tho I do have them).

In and out in under 10 mins.

Watching them unfold and refold is very satisfying. Here was my first attempt at the RH-Y-6.2 fold, filmed by my kiddo.

ALT: The bloom folds into a compact prism so that the edges of the hexagon have stacks of paper and the center is open. Then you can gently pull the sides to open.

I had some time today to download and try my hand at a few of the Bloom class of origami folds.

They were a lot of fun, data set with select crease patterns available here scholarsarchive.byu.edu/data/85/

(YT video of the researchers who found them: youtu.be/YMV43l1nnoM?...)

Kid: MOM I DID IT!

[proud grin. Grin falls. Thinking face goes on]
Kid: mom. There’s one tile leftover. I don’t like that.

[long ⏸️]
Kid: I’m just gonna put it in the middle for now.
June 24, 2025 at 10:02 PM
[kid starts to look for more curvy pieces. Is sad to find they don’t have enough]
Kid: @nhoskee.bsky.social would give me enough tiles. I know it
Me: where do you think the tiles you want may be?
[kid’s 💡goes off]
Kid: one the bottom side to the blue tiles!
[starts flipping them all over]
June 24, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Kid: i want to make the star next!
[does it]
Kid: I wanna make it bigger!
[confidently slides some shapes around to throw a blue tile in the middle of the other four. Pauses to think]
Kid: Wait. It’s going to have flat sides not pointy sides. I want pointy bits.
June 24, 2025 at 9:55 PM
Kid: mom! I got it! Now I want to make it bigger.
Me: how you planning to do that?
[kid moves top two tiles up]
Kid: I can use the backs that are all blue to add space like this
June 24, 2025 at 9:51 PM
Kid: mom! I want to make the teardrop shape the Chris’s said I could make.
Me: okay kiddo. Which tiles do you think you’ll need.

[kid quickly grabs two quarter circles]
Kid: hmm. How do I make it pointy? Let me draw a picture

@summerofmath.bsky.social ‘s box of mathematical delight arrived yesterday.

Today the kiddo (9yo) is exploring the Curvy Truchet Tiles.

#tmwyk thread incoming.

Got to hang with some of my favorite people at my favorite NC teacher event this weekend: NCSSM’s Teaching Contemporary Mathematics conference.

@lbmathemagician.bsky.social and Kevin Ji are such a delight to present with.

Some backyard farm chores happened today since I felt up to it.

A deep clean of the chicken coop, including tossing in a bunch of leaves for them to scratch around in, and rotated the compost pile. Got a 5 gallon bucket of good compost and probably two more that needs more finishing time.
February 22, 2025 at 10:58 PM
Bc we all need a laugh, I have a remote work first to share: I went outside to restock the chicken coop w/ water & feed. Pulled the "chain" to unlock the door & it snapped.

I was stuck inside the chicken coop.

Eventually I found the perfect stick to fit thru the fence and unlocked the door.

The coolest new-to-me gem is called “Fruit Jasper” where the mineral deposits look like fruit.

Our big one has an orange wedge, a banana, and grapes.
January 25, 2025 at 11:48 PM
Needless to say the kiddo had an absolute blast gem mining today.

Another fun and not-known-to-me fact:
Sapphires grow in iron deposits so, when they’re young, they look like brown chunks of regular rock.
January 25, 2025 at 11:45 PM
We learned today while chatting with the expert post gem mine trip, that rubies grow in a radiating triangular pattern & naturally occur in hexagonal prism shapes.

So, we needed to do some exploring. Good thing I packed my 4B pencils 😂

Off to do more research bc the kiddo wants to know more.
January 25, 2025 at 11:37 PM
Had the time to work on two more complex folds today.

This is maybe my 5th attempt at the grasshopper and I finally got most of the way through it (need larger paper next time to do the detail work).

The first run with the Pegasus fold. Not quite to spec, but close.
January 25, 2025 at 11:22 PM
I did the one called “Hide Google AI Overviews” because it’s what I think Shana used from her screen shot she shared and her post’s wording. The first one when you search for that name.

+1 on the skill level needed. And it can also look chaotic and unorganized and still patch the thing.

I present my 14 year old Patagonia patch/snap fix and the t-shirt the cat tore patch job from the weekend.

Here’s a tiny origami zoo of animals made from the cough drop wrappers that sustained me yesterday. (Not pictured: the herbal tea and honey that did most of the heavy lifting)

Day two of no voice, more origami creatures surely to join the desk zoo as the day progresses.
January 22, 2025 at 12:58 PM
Y’all it was soooo good.

Even the kiddo, who feels feelings about “foods that touch” sometimes enjoyed it.
January 19, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Chris, I’m in this graph and I don’t like it 😂

Updated to fit my flair of overthinking
January 17, 2025 at 11:59 AM
Here’s a few of the creations that my child didn’t take from me to put in her room.

Im really proud of that tiny pink bird in the lower right corner.
