Protecting against downside risk doesn’t have to come at the expense of continued increases in the yield potential.
No evidence of a tradeoff between yield stability and maximum yield in an analysis of hybrid performance across 34 environments. New pub led by @jensinadavis.bsky.social

"Don't worry about papers. There will always be more papers." Jianming Yu on 3D reaction norms to understand the functions of individual genes and how crops will perform in future, unobserved environments. Great plenary!

Had the honor of introducing my colleague, collaborator, and friend, Prof. Jinliang Yang, at the seminar marking his appointment as the next Gardner Endowed Professor of Quantitative Genetics. We are extremely fortunate to have Jinliang on the faculty here at the University of Nebraska.

A big, big thank you to everyone who made this project possible - big, useful datasets are the result of team efforts! 6/6

in our population, GxE interactions that would likely change selection decisions depending on the environments used for selection were rare, & unlike overall linear plasticity, plasticity in response to nitrogen fertilization was poorly repeatable w/in & across location-years. 5/6

In our population of 122 maize hybrids with mean parent release years as early as 1934 -- current commercial hybrids, we saw no clear tradeoff between linear plasticity and overall performance. We also show that 4/6

Lisa Coffey, Jon Turkus, Lina Lopez-Corona, Kyle Linders, Chidanand Ullagaddi, Dipak Santra, Pat Schnable, @szintri.bsky.social, and many, many more people combined to take on the big task of collecting 18 traits data from 6,000+ maize field plots across 700+ miles in Iowa and Nebraska 2/6

Last Friday afternoon, our preprint "Assessing the impact of yield plasticity on hybrid performance in maize" went live on bioRxiv! This was truly such a fun project to work on as my second project in the Schnable lab! 1/6
