RIP Val Kilmer.

His performance as Doc Holliday in Tombstone is still one of my all time favorites. He exudes charisma and charm and fellowship, all while slowly dying. It's incredible! A true actor's actor.

Still wild to me that whole neighborhoods in LA burned up, and the media is still not talking about climate change.

Whether the bird was always there and just hiding for 190 years, or it managed to swim there – this is an incredible story of nature's resilience!

Olive trees are vital to many cultures and livelihoods, including Palestinians'. But, like the people themselves, these trees are facing down destruction. An incredible piece by Elizabeth Fitt for @mongabay.bsky.social.

150,000 years ago humans were living in rainforests. Why does this matter? It shows that the connection between us & rainforests goes back far, far longer than previously thought & adds new data to early human evolution. We weren't just grasslands people.

Like humans, male elephants have distinct personalities, according to new reporting for @mongabay.bsky.social . Some are popular, some skittish, some aggressive. This impacts elephant society – keystone males, those popular boys, hold a lot of sway.

They thought it was going to be a wife of a king, but when they studied it they realized the tomb actually belonged to the king himself: Thutmose II, a King of Egypt reigning during the 1400s BC.

That's 3,500 years ago for anyone who is counting!

For my latest for Mongabay, I ask the question: did the Internet's Moo Deng obsession help wild pygmy hippos at all? The answer in the article. And yes I found Moo Deng adorable as hell!

New research shows hominids made it to Europe half a million years earlier than previously thought! They were hanging in Romania 1.95 million years ago. That is crazy.

I hit a milestone at the end of last year. After 8 years of research, travel and writing, I finally have a rough (very rough!) draft of my novel set at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. Working title: Athene's Children. #writing

Here's hoping you'll see it in the next few years!

And here's a photo of one of the last animals from a zoo. There has been discussion of trying to rewild some of the habitat with Amur tigers – it's closest relative.

Here is the map! They were gorgeous animals, quite shaggy. Wiped out by human hunting.

A French Village is probably the greatest show you've never heard of.

Currently, nearly finished with Season 2.

I'm really not a fan of the saxophone. For some reason, it just sounds needy to me. But I will say the one band that makes it work: Pink Floyd.

Question for #AncientBluesky – did Greek triremes have room below deck for crew, hoplites and light-armored fighters? Or were there typically some people on the deck when sailing even though it was precarious? #AncientGreece, #AncientWarfare

Hey all, I'm super stoked to announce that my book Baggage is going to be translated into German by Knesebeck!

Soon you'll be able to read it in German while sipping some Hefeweizen as God intended. (I'll share the new cover soon – it's really good!)

Javan tiger? For those keep tabs on this crazy story, a new paper just dropped throwing cold water (sadly!) on the idea that a Javan tiger may still survive. You need a degree in genetics to understand it, but the message is clear: it's probably still extinct.

Highly recommend Generation Dread by Britt Wray.

I read to help prep for a presentation and it's a great book for anyone dealing with #climate anxiety, depression or grief. Or anyone working with someone with those issues – head's up therapists!

Jon Stewart's love for Dipper not only made me weep, but caused me to give extra love to my two "dippers" yesterday, Auggie (left) and Taako (right).

Only a single full poem of Sappho's survives. She was considered the Tenth Muse of antiquity – the other nine being goddesses.

Why don't we have more of her poems? Christian in the Middle Ages destroyed the bulk – not to mention time and disintegration. But, what a loss!
