Yeah, the whole point is that the gambit didn't pay off because it wasn't progressive. Which is what voters in Wisconsin were looking for, as evidenced by these recent elections.

Mmm... dunno. It looks as if there's likely to have been a lot more of that going on in the most recent Wisconsin election. And I don't know if you could really call someone campaigning with Dick Cheney a progressive candidate. Amongst many many other things.

Yes, I know the first two candidates aren't as progressive as I'd like but they're absolutely more progressive than the Democratic establishment.
