PhD submitted 🥳🎉3.5 yrs..It’s been a rollercoaster, but what an amazing ride! Thanks to so many amazing people for helping me to get here…[email protected] @fsmccormack.bsky.social @benhenley.bsky.social @helenmcgregor 🙌photo quite aptly shows the disbelief, relief & joy!

5/5🧵Key findings:
1) In Enderby Land, significant increases in snow accumulation❄️ – approx 32 % of regional annual average – occur during all extreme El Niño events considered

2) 2015/16 El Niño-SMB changes across Antarctica extend beyond 5th & 95th probability distributions for SON average

4/5 🧵We examine the range of seasonal SMB responses across different Antarctic catchments during different intensities of ENSO events using high-resolution output from a reanalysis-forced Antarctic regional climate model

3/5 🧵 It is essential that we understand how and why snow accumulation varies to accurately predict Antarctica’s future, and the balance between regions of ocean-driven mass loss 🌊 & regions of increased snow accumulation ❄️from climate variability & extreme events 🌨️🌧️

2/5 🧵 Our new research considers how different intensities of ENSO events over the past 40 years impact the balance between snow accumulation 🌨️and melt🧊, to support better future predictions about how Antarctica will contribute to sea level rise 🌊

We started glaciology @monashuniversity.bsky.social in 2020 - myself, @fsmccormack.bsky.social & @rsjones.bsky.social

Look at us now!

📸 from our meeting today, with visiting speakers Tyler Pelle & Fakhra Muneeb. Also 🧁 saying goodbye to Indigo McKinnon & offering best wishes to Johanna Beckmann

🌊 "Nowhere on Earth is there a greater cause of uncertainty in sea-level rise projections than from East Antarctica, in Australia’s backyard. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet alone holds enough water to raise global sea levels by approximately 50m if completely melted."

Proud of Jess Macha for her brilliant plenary talk at the Australian Antarctic Research Conference. Jess, a PhD candidate with arcsaef.com shows how Antarctic surface mass balance is influenced by ENSO types. More here-
