New #LawPsych research from @jesssalerno.bsky.social and coauthors:

911 callers who didn't exhibit the expected emotional demeanor were more likely to be treated as possible suspects. Big implications for altruistic, innocent witnesses reporting crime.

Bluesky,

Today is my 2nd day on here as an escapee from The Bad Place. I am BEGGING y’all to repost this

I have $80,000 in scholarship money to give away to women and girls NATIONWIDE. I worked so hard to raise this money. Applications open THIS week. I’m scared the mass migration will impact this

Of note, we were not able to analyze intersectional data with race because there were so few attorneys of color. A key finding in and of itself.

When it comes to leadership roles the best fitting model included only gender, suggesting that discrepancy still transcends time and region. (4/4)

The proportion of women attorneys at trial increased somewhat from 2005 to 2019, but where they practice law mattered. Women were more underrepresented at trial in regions where people implicitly or explicitly endorse traditional gender roles associating men with career and women with family. (3/4)

Despite making up nearly half of graduating law students since 2000, women made up only 17% of attorneys at trial. They were even more underrepresented in leadership roles (delivering opening/closing statements). 2/4

New article out (led by Hannah Phalen and an amazing team of students) on regional gender bias and underrepresentation of women in the legal profession in @lhb-apls.bsky.social. Preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps...

We analyzed hundreds of civil trials across the country. Here is what we found (1/4):

Thank you 😊. No I haven’t seen it yet! (What’s with the super limited release?? It’s only in lame theaters here so was waiting for streaming.) What kind of shout out?

I also consult on how to use rigorous scientific methods and data to litigate cases, with a special place in my heart for innocence litigation.

Interests I pretend to have, but rarely have time for, are travel, making pasta and pizza, horror movies, and live music. Looking forward to getting to know y'all.

I study things like social influence and persuasion, gender/racial/sexuality biases, moral judgment, and decision-making, group deliberation. Often (but not always) in contexts like legal reasoning, jury decision making, punishment, wrongful convictions, etc.
