47 years ago around this time (11 am) on Monday, November 27, 1978, San Francisco endured one of its most tragic days.
On this date, both Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated inside City Hall by former supervisor, ex-cop, and firefighter Dan White.

Mayor Moscone died just three days after his 49th birthday.
Harvey Milk was 48 years old.
Dianne Feinstein, who was President of the Board of Supervisors at the time, delivered the heartbreaking announcement live on TV and radio:
"As President of the Board of Supervisors, it's my duty to make this announcement. Both Mayor [George] Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. The suspect is Supervisor Dan White."
That night, thousands gathered for a candlelight vigil and march beginning outside Harvey Milk's camera shop at 575 Castro Street, making their way up Market Street to the steps of City Hall-a quiet, powerful tribute to two leaders whose lives were cut short.
In the aftermath, Dianne Feinstein became Acting Mayor of San Francisco, and she appointed Harry Britt to fill Milk's vacant seat on the Board of Supervisors.
Britt continued Milk's legacy for many years before his passing on June 24, 2020.
