Y'all love a blue bird, so here's a Steller's Jay that mistook my fountain for a bird bidet. #birding

As the diesels come driving up from the plains, all bunched up like pearls on a string…

Cha Ching! Visiting my aunt Seiko and meeting my mom and cousin there also. I’ve birded Wyoming and Colorado before but it was pre-eBird so have no lists there yet.

Maybe. Probably not. But maybe. My cousin is Wyoming fish and game manager so he might have an idea.

Travel day! Leaving Portland for an amazing exotic destination. Short flight from PDX so should be #birding this afternoon. Any guesses?
Hint: high altitude area —US state where women first gained suffrage.
Portland airport carpet and stumptown coffee, travel crocs

A Cetti's Warbler Cettia cetti on a branch of the storm-felled Horse Chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum in a small London park this morning. Since this tree was toppled by Storm Henk on 2nd January 2024, I have photographed 30 species of #birds on its branches.

We always capitalize Alpine Fumblescrubket.

Brown -headed would be a lifer for me. Red-breasted are our most common—you can hear their toy-trumpet call all summer.

Wait until you hear about bushtits.

I get it! We might try to make a drip fountain with a cast iron birdbath we were given.
jhmsparky.bsky.social
You could set up a small fountain?

Great shot!
When we were in London we learned to call these birds “Woodpigs” 😜

You might have had red-breasted or white-breasted nuthatches in Illinois but not likely Pygmy. 👍😉

These Pygmy Nuthatches visited our campsite's water spigot this morning at Tumalo State Park, Deschutes County, Oregon #birding

We were treated to a kiting exhibit put on by a group of Mountain Bluebirds at Tumalo Reservoir, Deschutes County, Oregon. I only noticed while going thru my pics that this one is banded! #birding

Once called “devil divers” in much of the western US. They indeed submerge like a sub, forward or backward!
I know a Swedish bird guide who twitched on one in NE Canada and after a successful sighting got it tattooed on his neck.
