I don’t consider it a trope to point out the Board of Deputies and other centrist and right-wing British Jewish elites don’t seem especially interested in combatting antisemitism qua antisemitism, but are extremely interested in conflating criticism of the state of Israel with antisemitism per se

I remember this especially because it’s the last time the question was “should we change the country from this obviously cruel and stupid bullshit”, and after this it was relentless idiotic no content drivel that nobody could argue against, because that’s how they win. It’s how they’ve always won.
Sitting at the pub at Waverley Station takes me back to Christmas 2018 here with JK Rowling complaining Old Jezza’s Labour were rubbish. To which I recall saying: it’s not that I think they’re gifted or even mildly skilled, it’s that they’re the only people offering anything I actually want.

Every interview with a right-wing politician is like: "Mr. Hitler is adamant: If we sacrifice enough children, Santa Claus will come back and deliver 5% GDP growth. But I have to ask him: Do you ever worry that your relentless advocacy for working folks offends the rootless cosmopolitan parasites?"
I don’t get how Jenrick can actually believe that we should shrink the population and then start making more of our own things from pots and pans to what iPhones? How does he think that happens?

I can't help but feel as though all this heat over whether Nigel Farage was a racist bigot fifty years ago is a distraction from the same discussion the press and political class continue to dodge: That the party he leads, right now, is a, racist, bigoted, far-right political party.

Wes Streeting orders review of mental health diagnoses as benefit claims soar
Health secretary has asked experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become ‘over-pathologised’ The health secretary, Wes Streeting, has ordered a clinical review of the diagnosis of mental health conditions, according to reports. Streeting is understood to be concerned about a sharp rise in the number of people making sickness benefits claims because of diagnoses for mental illness, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the Times reported. He has asked leading experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become “over-pathologised”, the newspaper said, as he seeks to grapple with the 4.4 million working-age people now claiming sickness or incapacity benefit. The figure has risen by 1.2 million since 2019, while the number of 16 to 34-year-olds off work with long-term sickness because of a mental health condition is said to have grown rapidly in the same period. Streeting told the Times he knew from “personal experience how devastating it can be for people who face poor mental health, have ADHD or autism and can’t get a diagnosis or the right support”. He added: “I also know, from speaking to clinicians, how the diagnosis of these conditions is sharply rising. “We must look at this through a strictly clinical lens to get an evidence-based understanding of what we know, what we don’t know, and what these patterns tell us about our mental health system, autism and ADHD services. “That’s the only way we can ensure everyone gets timely access to accurate diagnosis and effective support.” The review, which is expected to be launched on Thursday, is set to be led by Prof Peter Fonagy, a clinical psychologist at University College London specialising in child mental health, with Sir Simon Wessely, a former president of the Royal College of Psychiatry, acting as vice-chair. He's been on Question Time once.

Nigel Farage, 44 times.

The more anti-immigrant and racist Labour becomes, the more it:

1) Normalises anti-immigration and racist sentiments, boosting Reform's appeal since it's their specialty

2) Drives moderate voters away from Labour because they're appalled at the direction Labour is taking

Losing in all directions!

Farage was recruited as a useful figurehead for all kinds of idiotic outrage stories, and to aggressively troll the Tories from the right: a helpful tool that could be puffed up or tamped down, as required. He was never meant to be PM and he has overstepped the mark by trying.

I think we’ve seen over and over that the question of whether a story “goes away” is basically: is there will to keep asking the same questions over and over, and to keep running headlines like Victims Say Politician Is Bastard. There was no will to do it before. It seems that there is now.

The UK's intrusion into Iraqi politics, on the other hand, was fine and dandy.
I only recently listened to this extraordinary 10 part podcast - Sergei and the Westminster Spy Ring by @peterjukes.bsky.social and @carolecadwalla.bsky.social . It’s gripping, chilling, and deeply disturbing. The facts of Russian intrusion into UK politics laid bare, in horrifying fashion.
Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell @alastaircampbell2.bsky.social spell out what needs to happen - the same demand we’ve made for years.

We need a real, independent inquiry 🧵
