I'm a huge Beatles fan but I can't do the solo stuff. Don't know why. It always seems like somethings missing....probably the other 3 Beatles. Anyway I've just dropped George and Ringo and the shortlist is down to 32.

Have to be really ruthless already here. I've a shortlist of nearly 50 so The Commodores, Paul McCartney, New York Dolls,Robert Wyatt and Funkadelic all got the boot today.

Quick question does the Manassas album qualify or is it regarded as a Stephen Stills album.

Searching for the young soul rebels...and he's still searching. A soul album that came in a roundabout way from punk while managing to sound completely unique. Arguably the greatest debut album ever.

I can remember the anticipation around this coming out. I can remember standing awestruck in my raincoat in the SFX watching them tour it. It was exactly the kind of record that a young Joy Division fan needed them to release.

It's probably his most inaccessible record but it's certainly one of his best. He interprets raw blues here as only he can. The Bad Seeds are excellent supplying sparse backing for effect while the bass keeps the beat.

Early 80s late 70s saw a huge resurgence in electronic music. I reckon Low got the ball rolling. This album was a game changer and stood apart. I think he played everything himself on synths he built himself.

I'm going to do this early as I'm working later

The 3rd band from Liverpool that everyone forgets. A stunning underrated debut with a great production and a really atmospheric vibe to it. Didn't expect this to make my 5 to be honest.

Took a chance on this years ago because I wanted to get into a band that nobody else had heard of and they seemed a good bet. They were. First 3 albums are brilliant and I still listen to them. Hard to leave this one out.

First time I heard Sister Europe on the radio I thought it was a Bowie track that I'd somehow missed out on. I always felt the Psychedelic Furs channelled him brilliantly.
I prefer the 2nd album but this is a great debut.

This was originally meant to be a project by the BEF formed after a split in the Human League but a brilliant debut album followed by the single Temptation put paid to that. Album still sounds brilliant. Love the contrasting sides.

This came along just at the right time when the post punk thing started to get stale and formulaic. Something new was needed and they provided. I made the entire journey with them up to the final album and they never disappointed.

Time to cut from 10 down to the final 5.
Number 10
The ultimate make music in your bedroom independent album. It still sounds edgy today and it hasn't lost any of it's charm. Seem to remember about 5 people in my class had this and it still retains a cult status.

Soft Cell weren't just a pop group. They had a lot more depth and darkness than their contemporaries. Great lyrics, great frontman heavily influenced by Northern Soul and the great David Ball in the engine room. Great debut but it won't go any further.

My favourite version of Microdisney is when they were a duo just before they left Cork, my favourite song is Pink Skinned Man, so the debut for me was very much a London record and I was on the fence for a while.
Off the fence now but it won't make my final 10.

Have to cut this list down from 15 to 10 and it's proving really difficult because they're all potentially top 5.
I'll reluctantly start with these 3.

Late 70s early 80s there was a great post punk scene here. Lot of the bands largely forgotten. This was a great debut. Treasure On The Wasteland has one of the greatest intros ever. I'd love to put this in my final 5 but it won't fit.

Originally formed as a musical vehicle for Steve Strange they were like a post punk Wilburys featuring members of Ultravox,Magazine and The Skids. The album was really good and it's stood the test of time.
However it won't go further than my final 25.

This is one of the most enjoyable of the #albums series and it'll be really hard to cut them down. I'll start with these 4 cutting my shortlist from 25 to 20.

It's a good debut but the genius didn't really kick in until Zen Arcade even though there's hints on this record.
It won't make my final 25.
