I genuinely don’t understand why “having more time” is even an issue. They are testing whether students learned the information, not whether they can regurgitate it back as a speed-run. Most students can finish the tests in time and more time wouldn’t even benefit them anyways.

No comprehensive data exist on this trend, but the majority of the 33 professors I spoke with relayed similar experiences says Rose. What BS. Who does she think she is?

Too many of the bigger issue is how many of these student services departments are just form assigning accomodations and have a very shallow toolbox to draw from. It's all CYA and rarely student centered actual support. And often kids are struggling so much more than they feel allowed to share.

Extra time on tests is by far the most common accomodation I get for students and I don't give tests. I definitely wouldn't give timed tests. It's a good reminder that most college professors don't need to know anything about pedagogy.

Source: I'm pretty sure I did something like this myself at least once, and I know at least one kid I fostered did it with peers.

Something I think people (such as reporters) might underestimate is the likelihood of a kid with a deficit lying to their peers and saying they're gaming the system.

Having deficits carries a lot of stigma and kids may think saying they're just gaming the system will play better with peers.

"Rich kids are gaming disability accommodations to gain an unfair advantage" is actually very different from "America has an extra-time-on-tests problem" — and the author hasn't proved that either! Rich kids might just be more likely to be diagnosed.

What do the editors of this magazine think their job is?

"Too many kids are getting extra time on tests!" should immediately be followed by "how many kids are getting extra time on tests?" If you don't know, either find out or write about something you do know.
