But inequalities are even greater if we focus on local areas, where there is an 18-year gap in healthy life expectancy at birth for both males and females. This suggests that health inequality targets may need to be more granular than regional level to ensure communities aren’t overlooked. 3/3

These differences in life expectancy broadly align with socioeconomic deprivation, with local areas in the more affluent south of England having, on average, the highest life expectancy, while local areas in Scotland and the north of England have the lowest. 2/3
