You used to see the Penguins constantly leading the way on this viz. No more. Their forecheck is one of the worst in the NHL, but the structure still demands it be up-tempo and aggressive. It's a total divorce from the roster construction. Data via @allthreezones.bsky.social

Bryan Rust's finishing has been middle of the road-ish but he's still in the 98th percentile of forwards for 5v5 goals this year.

Consider the following from @hockeyviz.com. Expected goal generation at a team level with Sidney Crosby on the ice is 39% higher than it is without him. That is.... a lot. And a testament to his dominance. Areas of red = areas where the Penguins take excess shots relative to league average.

This is okay. But someone spitting the green mist a la Great Muta would be even cooler.

The crashout here is tangible. And what's worse? This was an entirely predictable outcome. You could silo yourself in one of the video bucket or the data bucket and the end result would ultimately be the same. Red lights and warning signs all over the place.

One player I can't get enough of watching this year is Nico Hischier. He's become one of the best skaters in the league with regards to using edge work and pivoting to skate defenders off of him. This is how you use your legs to create space outside of traditional speed. Poetry in motion.
