Text: Introduction: Camp memories in Africa and beyond Jochen Lingelbach University of Bayreuth, Germany Abstract Introducing the special issue on the memorialization of camps in Africa and beyond, this text discusses key questions of memory studies and the global history of encampment. Whatever their purpose, all camps are meant to be exceptional, transitory and temporary. Camps are often connected to contested histories and memorialization efforts by former inmates or others can lead to controversies and struggles over its interpretation. Building on a range of empirical examples from Africa and beyond, dealing with camps ranging from the most coercive to the benevolent and from the beginning of the twentieth century until today, this special issue invites a comparative, globally entangled and actor-centred view on camp memorialization.

»Wissenschaft und Unrecht« Interview mit Manuela Bauche zur neuen Ausstellung der FU Berlin am Erinnerungsort Ihnestraße Manuela Bauche und Jochen Lingelbach Seit Oktober 2024 gibt es im und am Gebäude des Otto-Suhr-Instituts für Politikwissenschaft (OSI) der Freien Universität Berlin (FU) eine neue Dauerausstellung zur Geschichte des Ortes in der Ihnestraße 22. Hier befand sich von 1927 bis 1945 das Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Anthropologie, menschliche Erblehre und Eugenik (KWI-A), mit dessen Geschichte sich die Ausstellung unter dem Titel Erinnerungsort Ihnestraße. Wissenschaft und Unrecht auseinandersetzt. Mitarbeiter*innen des Instituts vertraten bereits in der Weimarer Republik eugenische Ideen, einzelne Wissenschaftler*innen griffen auf ältere kolonialanthropologische Forschung zurück und während des Nationalsozialismus unterstützten Forscher*innen die rassistische, antisemitische und behindertenfeindliche Verfolgungs- und Vernichtungspolitik der Nationalsozialisten und beteiligten sich an Verbrechen. All diese Themen behandelt die sehenswerte Ausstellung, die sich über vier Etagen in den Fluren und dem Außengelände der Ihnestraße 22 verteilt. Für WerkstattGeschichte sprach Jochen Lingelbach mit der Leiterin des Projekts, Dr. Manuela Bauche, über die Strukturen dahinter, die Inhalte und Aushandlungen auf dem langen Weg von den ersten Ideen bis zur Eröffnung.

Anfang des gedruckten Artikels mit Abstract: Schleichende Aneignung, symbolische Markierung und Gewalt Die extreme Rechte und ihre Praktiken der Raumaneignung in Deutschland nach 1945 Daniel Gerster Abstract Historical research on the extreme right after 1945 has gained attention in Germany only in recent years. Focusing initially on social actors, their organizations and ideologies, it has now turned to new questions and approaches. This article shows how research can profit from a spatial historical approach. It focusses on practices of spatial appropriation and examines the ways in which the extreme right in Germany attempted to occupy (public) space and to impose its ideas of order after 1945. Three modes of spatial appropriation repeatedly used by the extreme right take center stage: gradual occupation, symbolic marking, and violent seizure. These are ideal types which are intertwined in historical practice, as is shown with regard to the so-called »nationally liberated zones« of the 1990s and 2000s. In general, the article shows how a spatial-historical approach can help to deconstruct one-dimensional descriptions. It allows the simultaneity of different perceptions and practices to be depicted and incorporates the perspectives of those affected by the extreme right as well as those of other actors.
