There's a long history of Christians deciding that Jews were secretly insulting them and demanding that Jews adopt a new term to replace whatever they were using to refer to non-Jews. You can see the various replacements in censored Jewish texts.

I'd like to see changes of this sort arising from halachic debate, not supervising agencies' fiat. The alleged problems they identify seem kind of minor, and I find it hard to believe this is a case of נשתנה הטבע.
