I'm not saying this is the likely explanation or otherwise going all conspiracy theorist, but I think it's unwise to just summarily put anything past these people given we more or less know their ultimate goal and some of the other crazy shit they've already pulled.

They have to be feeling it and getting nervous knowing that, if they're not successful, things can go really badly for all of them.

I mean, there's no question that a primary goal of the admin is to foment a violent reaction from someone, anyone as reason to move deeper into authoritarianism.
They've so far failed and time is running out before next year's elections; Trump's numbers are getting catastrophic, as is his health.
