"Materials science...is that, like, sewing?" was one I got as an undergrad. Annoying because the answer is technically not a straight-up no, but if they meant it as a sexist insult you don't get to say the whole real answer anyway.

Yes, there is important information. There's inflection and mood and hesitation and volume and so many things. And some people who need subtitles actually understand multiple languages, when we're allowed to see what people are even saying! 😮

I started Duolingo Swedish because my understanding of Swedish was from crime drama and heavily biased towards words for things to do with murder and this is the opposite of solving that problem. On the other hand I'm concentrating on Italian now anyway and it appears perfume is always the answer 😣
