That's so hard! 💔 I mean, you can start testing whether he can be an indoor cat, but the allergies are rough. I don't suppose a regular Zyrtec would do it?

I was wondering how long it would take you to start wondering about that!

Back up at UConn today for NERDS and a trip to the Dairy Bar!
A photo of an ice cream sundae. Vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, whipped cream, a sprinkle of spice, and candy corn are all visible.

I honestly think our department just attracts good, funny, smart students somehow.

They're doing this of their own accord. They know I find it funny, and it gives them a little mental break.

I think you should still get one and stamp scrap paper with it while grading and yelling "WRONG!"

Third real analysis homework: One assignment with peach-colored splotches on each of the five pages that get progressively lighter as you go along. Well done again, student. Definitely looking forward to the next assignment. 📃

He was on one of my prelim committees. I'm glad I didn't have any more contact with him than I did.

Thank you! I'm ridiculously excited about this.

👀 Are you willing to share the paper???

Just voted for #BotY! #TeamRuru forever, followed by birds that have divebombed me or a family member (kākā and skua), followed by kiwi pukupuku because two of you were so persuasive, and the takahē because it's just such a good round borb. 🦉

This is roughly how I handle it when students turn in unstapled homework. I tell them that I will of course staple their homework for them, but that I consider it to be a mere societal convention that there's only one staple and it's in the upper left corner.

Second real analysis homework: One of the students used the coffee stains package to put a coffee stain on the second and third pages -- identically placed but lighter on the third page to mimic an actual coffee stain. Well done, student.

I am very disappointed to see that @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social has signed on to this amicus brief, which argues that trans women should not be allowed to play in women’s sports. (1/6)

If you give in-class tests, figuring out whether to keep them at 50 minutes and make use of the other part of the class block or make them 75 minutes and lose instructional time.

Yay for experiments! The data collection responsibility is now in my hands.

Also, there was no formal sense of "specifying a procedure" at the time Hilbert stated the problem -- that would have to wait 20+ years.

I'm a computability theorist and I love this problem. One of the cool things about it is that Hilbert had it "miscategorized" in terms of modern mathematics. The other logic problems are #1 and #2. This is in the middle of the algebra section.

Achtung, Nerd-Content.
