so a longer stage would mean more time without that "reset." That may be less of a factor in an analog game that doesn't test reflexes for half an hour straight but there could be ways to simulate it with a difficulty escalation over time

I'd honestly never really considered stage length being a factor in difficulty, since these games have little downtime either way. But now that I think about it more, you're on to something, since they do tend to dial back the difficulty for a bit at the start of a stage to ramp it up again & higher

I can only really speak to shoot-em-ups, but I play a *lot* of them, and the stages are usually about the same length. If there's an exception, it's almost always the final stage or two that's longer. Sometimes you'll have one shorter-than-average stage before they get longer in the end stretch.
