We are in dire need of a games formalism movement.
thinking about how like 99% of pop game design discourse is just this tweet: it's something that SEEMS really smart to say, and then once you think about it for more than about ten seconds, you realize it's not even correct.

Digital games can be distilled to only having five verbs, they are: Move, Jump, Shoot, Select, and Observe.

Innovative mechanics in games are simply combinations and sequences of those verbs in patterns you've never considered.

I got off github a while ago now and can endorse Codeberg as a great alternative; and it's a non-profit to boot.

After a long jam hiatus, I am back and have submitted what is perhaps my most primitive game for this year's GMTK jam: sproqet

I am simultaneously self-conscious and quite proud about this little thing, and I'll tell you why in a thread here.

Software has been maintained by humans who code for decades, so tell me what you really mean by “unsustainable”? How about you admit, all of a sudden, those senior engineers propping up your business are worth less to you? The other cool execs you’re trying to mimic aren’t beating around the bush.
Even companies that specialize in AI tools.

This is a heartening read as someone who is feeling burnt out creatively, due in no small part to feeling walled-in by tools. It’s inspiring and I would love to read more about how others are using lighter weight frameworks or hand-rolled solutions. Even more so for fantasy console devs.
I've been making video games in some form for 20 years, so I wrote an article about my process - and why I don't use an engine.

Repost for those who may have missed it, I made a cute little Playdate game!

A daily art app with fun limitations. Most importantly, you get exciting (or ordinary) prompts every day! For 5/28, a great one: Draw a CAMERA. A nice little freebie in advance of _Season 2_. #playdate #gamedev
