I had to wait until my kid stopped crashing into things to build the “pokey coffee table” but it was worth it.

I got a template in the mail! Clever marketing from the direct mail company there? But NCOA makes me think that the National Council On Aging, the Non-Commissioned Officer's Association, the National Change Of Address program, or the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia is trying to get in touch.

just in case you wanted to play the MS-DOS-based hacking game that came on a floppy disk in the Sneakers press kit, we've got it emulated in-browser over at @archive.org: archive.org/details/Snea...

we are once again having the conversation about what is and is not a sandwich

personally I've always liked Knuth's 1999-era proposal to call them e.g. a "large megabyte" because it is funny (don't tell him I said this, he's already mad at me for stopping him from turning on a pipe organ one time)

we've been arguing about it since before I was born (also as a person who orders storage in, uh, pebibyte quantities, the difference is a lot more than 5% now) books.google.com/books?id=YjA...

Exciting update!

there's a bar near me (Old Gilbert Road) that has a cheap burger specifically inspired by Dick's. It's not the same but it definitely does the trick when I need one (this is their old menu, I am delightfully completely unable to find a picture of the new one)

the future-looking data comes from DSCOVR, the station at the Earth-Sun L1 lagrange, about a million miles sunward -- the blue line is the current time on Earth, and the charting is the components of the solar wind www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/geo...

once you're set up, or from home if you're thinking of just popping out, you want to keep an eye on the last few frames of the Space Weather Prediction Center 30-minute Forecast -- this lets you look slightly into the future to see if the aurora is starting up: www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aur...
September 1, 2025 at 10:18 PM
then head to www.weather.gov to look at the spot and find the hourly weather forecast with predicted cloud cover (of course, you want minimal)
September 1, 2025 at 10:16 PM
first, prepare -- you want someplace dark and with low/no cloud cover. Use darksitefinder.com/map/ to find someplace you can go with minimal light pollution (if you're in Portland, Stubb Stewart is the closest but will be crowded, best within a couple hours is immediately southeast of Mt. Adams)

There's a great chance to see some aurora tonight! A few tips for the casual observer in this thread.

First off, this forecast shows potential overhead aurora (green band) and the edge of where you might be able to see it near the horizon (green line)

uh he just plucked this, scrambled, out of a toy pile and did this. I have never seen him touch a Rubix Cube before in my life (video is just of the last bit after I realized what was happening)
