Political analyst & journalist, KDKA-TV (CBS Pittsburgh) for 30 years; CMU Heinz College adjunct professor for 25 years; congressional staffer for 14 years; and even a practicing attorney! Retired sort of, mostly I just like people with strong views!
If you're looking for election analysis on Pennsylvania's Supreme Court judicial retention election (YES or NO) or the race for Mayor of Pittsburgh between Corey O'Connor and Tony Moreno, tune in to KDKA-TV at 5:30 & 6:30 -- and don't forget the 8:00 pm election special Tuesday night on KDKA+.

If you saw these four dudes heading your way, what would you do?

Details, please. Contrary to original Nippon acquisition deal, did President Donald Trump negotiate a true partnership where Nippon Steel does not take over USSteel, but rather Americans run the company without Japanese veto? Perhaps we'll find out soon.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we fly our flags to remember the service men and women who gave their lives to protect this country. Over 1.1 million Americans have lost their lives in wars since the Revolution. We honor them!

Apparently a number of southern states still recognize Confederate Memorial Day, noting the 258,000 Confederate soldiers who died defending secession and slavery. Monday was that day in some states. The Memorial Day we celebrate in May honors U.S. military dead. It began right after the Civil War.

Whether Catholic or not, if you were a Cardinal who could vote in the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, what kind of Pope would you like to see?

As a lawyer & retired academic (25 years teaching grad students at Carnegie Mellon's Heinz College). I am deeply concerned about "kidnapping" foreign students for their views. If they did something illegal, arrest & charge them! Don't hide from judicial process. It recalls words of Pastor Niemoller.

Do you feel betrayed? That was the message to Julius Caesar in 44 BC when a soothsayer, according to Shakespeare, said, "Beware the Ides of March," meaning the 15th! Today that expression means one of betrayal.

Don't look at your 401k, your IRA, or any retirement accounts! Is this what retirement looks like under Donald Trump?

Memory Lane. Twelve years ago then Councilman Bill Peduto files petitions to run for mayor of Pittsburgh on the 6th floor of the County Office Building. He won two terms before losing to Rep
Ed Gainey who is now being challenged by County Controller Corey O'Connor. It's the cycle of political life!

Does the Democratic Party's narrow endorsement of @coreyoconnorpa.bsky.social over Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey mean anything in the May primary?

I'm happy to be on Daylight Saving Time. It means Spring and more sun in the evening. But isn't it time to stay on DST all year long?

Anyone notice Republicans are about to overtake Democrats in PA statewide voter registration? Dems lead the GOP by just 182,000 voters with approximately 3.806 million Dems to 3.624 million Republicans. Independents are now 1.082 million with 323,000 in "other" parties. Talk about a "swing" state!

Black History Month ends, so I asked AI about future months. March: Women's History; April: European Heritage & Arab American; May: Asian American Pacific Islander & Jewish American; June: LGBTQ+ Pride; July: Disability Pride; Sept: Hispanic Heritage; Nov: Native Americans. Any more?

Birthday of John Harvey Kellogg, co-inventor of corn flakes & bizarre anti-sex physician of 19th/20th century. Among other things, he promoted circumcision of boys (& girls) to reduce their sexual pleasure. He later recanted saying no health reason to circumcise but, oops, too late for many.

A tremendous honor to be invited by Warren Goss to his 100th birthday luncheon at Christ Church at Grove. Warren is one of the surviving veterans who stormed the beaches of Normandy on the first day of the D-Day invasion. I interviewed him for KDKA on the 75th & 80th anniversaries. Congrats, Warren!

A short but feisty mayoral debate between Ed Gainey & Corey O'Connor before 14th Ward Independent Dems & Dem Cttee. Gainey cited accomplishments while O'Connor criticized failure to plan for Pittsburgh's future. I'm expecting lots of fireworks in the week ahead. Predictions, anyone?

I'm a big fan of @mcuban.bsky.social, watching many reruns of "Shark Tank," but never had pleasure of meeting him altho we both graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School. He's younger but he's a classmate of my sister Sarah. [See yearbook pics below]. You think Mark will ever follow me on @bsky.app?

Four years ago, incumbent Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto did NOT seek the endorsement of the Democratic Party Committee. Then PA Rep Ed Gainey defeated Tony Moreno (who later became a Republican), 326 to 224. This year, it's Gainey v. @coreyoconnorpa.bsky.social for the Dem Endorsement. Predictions?

I was deeply honored by the recognition of the Allegheny County Council this week for my 30 years of TV on KDKA-TV. Especially appreciated the bipartisan comments. Thanks to all 15 members, especially cosponsors Sam DeMarco @bethanyhallam.bsky.social & Bob Macey!

Does anyone think the Democratic primary race next May 20 between Mayor Ed Gainey and County Controller @coreyoconnorpa.bsky.social will be a blow-out for one side or the other? Or will this race for mayor of Pittsburgh come down to the wire?

After a short break, I'm back on BlueSky. As you may know, I retired from full-time work at KDKA-TV (CBS Pittsburgh) effective December 1st. Just back from the Christmas Stroll on Nantucket where the town crier hails the arrival of Santa Claus on a Coast Guard boat. An old-fashioned Christmas!

Sen. Bob Casey (D) just called Dave McCormick (R) to concede this election. I suspect this will be closest Senate election in PA history with Casey losing by 16,000 votes. In 1956, Philly Mayor Joe Clark (D) defeated Sen. James Duff (R) by 17,970 votes. Congrats, Sen.-elect McCormick!

After 30 years on KDKA-TV (CBS), it's time to step back a bit. I am retiring from full-time on-air broadcasting December 1st, but hopefully that won't mean I am disappearing from political analysis and interviews. I am deeply grateful to all of you for making my career successful and a lot of fun!

On this date in Gettysburg PA, 161 years ago perhaps the most famous speech in American history was delivered by an American president. Its words ring true today.
