BART continues to try creative things and to create destinations on its system. You're not likely to fill a train with a nature walk, but you are going to expand how people think about how to use the system (and get media coverage). Every agency should be doing this sort of work!

BART hosted its first ever nature walks this morning starting at 19th Street Station and going around Lake Merritt!

They were led by conservationist Jeff Miller, author of this year’s official One Book One BART selection, “Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide”

🧪 Leaks this past week have shown just how much the Trump admin wants to slash future budgets for science:

📉 43% cut for NIH
📉 28% cut for NOAA
📉 47% cut for NASA science

So let me interject with some historical context for a bit of dare I say...cautious optimism?

New story from @dangaristo.bsky.social on the NSF grad fellowship cuts:

A key point: “GRFPs are one of the most cost-effective ways for NSF to give out money,” Evans says, because the outcome is a trained, promising young scientist and it’s relatively inexpensive.

🧪 Update: Now starting to see some new awards go out in NSF's Directorate for STEM Education (EDU)!

Been hovering at 3 awards for past two months (excluding PI transfers awards).

But shot up to 14 awards in just past two days. Obviously, it's still massively below 2024 levels, but it's progress.

This is the way…

“The elected officials in Washington have to stop protesting in Washington. They have to go back to their districts…show the consequences…show the school that isn’t operating…they have to make it real.”

With social media, word will spread to neighboring districts—even red ones.
