It’s a decent academic parlor game: Nixon after an evening of heavy drinking, or Trump cold sober: which is the more impaired chief executive? On the one hand, Nixon drank a *lot.* On the other hand, he knew how to read.

I take the POV that while he’s done worse, this has such profound symbolic meaning that the next president, assuming Dems ever win it back, should rip down his monstrosity and build back the original. And invite the same corporations that bankrolled this bullshit to pay for every cent of the rebuild

The philosophical and practical merits of filibuster abolition aside, and they are many, how does this help them win Senate races? It’s urgent that I send money to candidates in Maine, Ohio, North Carolina and Nebraska, why, exactly? It we aren’t in the range of 60, I’m supposed to be motivated why?

The filibuster has become a fascinating litmus test of the chasm separating D senators from their voters. It's not just a disagreement. Ending the filibuster is now close to an article of faith among D voters; for the Senators it's like abolishing habeas or trial by jury. Unthinkable, unamerican.
