Thank you! The orange & blue were a really fun color combo. It’s more of an orchid/silver now and overdue for a touch up.

I’ve started a mute list for the influx of Nazi accounts. I’ll be screenshot if and sharing some of the accounts I haven’t seen others pass around already in this thread with alt text and translations for those in languages other than English.

(1/B/ii) — Bigotry, particularly as it relates to systemic forms of oppression & discrimination, has a very real impact on the mental health of those who are habitually targets for institutional discrimination and identity-based violence.

(1/B)- Of particular note, using mental health terminology to discuss racism/bigotry adds another layer by implying a pathological origin for behaviors, attitudes, & beliefs that stem from systemic, cultural norms rooted in coercive conformity & supremacist ideologies.

(1) Using terms/slurs commonly associated with mental health muddies the waters around what mental health is & reinforces the stigma people with mental illness (PWMI) already experience.
(1/A) - PWMI are more likely to be victims of violence that to perpetuate violence

A few excerpts from my second favorite essay of all time, Yonatan Zunger’s article “Tolerance is not a moral precept.” These words feel particularly apropos right now.

“Innocent” is a social construct. And a highly subjective one at that. It’s often deployed as a dog whistle.

In conversations about reproductive choice - the implication is that people who terminate their pregnancy are not by virtue of having gotten pregnant in the first place.

Another study, this one specifically looks at how stigma towards patients seeking pain treatment impacts prescriber willingness to treat chronic pain with medication.

The challenge isn’t fear of legal consequences or appropriateness of treatment - it’s stigma.

And again, I’m saying “most doctors would prescribe when…” is not accurate.

Doctors often dismiss chronic pain patients & question the need for pain management meds. Doctors denying the need to treat chronic pain in patients is an ongoing challenge & it costs lives. www.apa.org/monitor/apr0...

Ack, grabbed the wrong excerpt. Not that the other doesn’t also apply here, but:

“Mommy, Timmy hit me back!” holds no more ethical weight among adults than it does among children.”

Is the key point I really wanted to make here.

You think this is a double standard?

Well then, I have news for you. When it comes to everyday racism - you also have to consider the structural power dynamics at play.

Please take a seat in the corner & read Yonatan Zunger’s article “Tolerance is not a moral precept” medium.com/extra-extra/...

I always want to respond to this sort of thing with aggressive eye contact and ask “Are you familiar with the character Kaz Brekker from Sgadow and Bone?” Then just continue to hold their gaze in silence.
