It’s Saturday night and I am editing PDFs (for reasons) and this section on assessment from a 1999 writing text jumped out at me, not least because of all the ~discourse~ on here about student writing
Addressing Assessment: Assessment often drives instruction. If assessments ask for certain kinds of skills, teachers feel compelled to teach these skills explicitly. As a result, increasing amounts of time are given over to "nuts and bolts" or to "bits and pieces" and soon, teachers lament, the larger picture is lost. What began as an attempt to certify that students have achieved a certain level of mastery in language development has turned into its op-posite: reducing literacy development to a series of hurdles that often have little to do with actual competence in reading and writing. Skills-based teaching, as just described, does help some students pass their assessment tests. Often it does not. LBW has tried to address this discrepancy by asking why. No responsible teacher would argue that levels of competence should not be determined or that both teachers and students should not be held accountable for what they have or have not accomplished in any given school year or academic subject. So where is the problem? LBW teachers concluded that current measures of assessment, however well-intentioned and well-informed, do not measure real literacy development. LBW teachers, similar to teachers everywhere, do not resent standards per se. But they do resent standards imposed from without that do not reflect either the realities of their classrooms or the lives and languages of their students. They resent such standards and the necessity of teaching to them when this endeavor gets in the way of what they truly want to teach: literacy instruction based on reading, writing, conversation, dialogue, debate, reflection and social action. LBW teachers (again, like many teachers elsewhere) find themselves in an uncomfortable position. Wanting to do their best for their students, not wanting to short-change them in any way whatsoever, they devise the best methods they can to help their students pass their assessment tests.

I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it. But I am a hater, and I will not be polite. The machine is disgusting and we should break it. The people who build it are vapid shit-eating cannibals glorifying ignorance. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.

It is here that the frame breaks. I’ve told you how this plays out where I work but I do so in full confidence that you know your own version of it, wherever you are—and if you didn’t a few months ago, you do now. It’s startling, the velocity with which a decades-long crisis in the humanities has, with the flourish of a few quick Executive Orders, become a crisis of the university, full stop. As promised by the feverish Project 2025 document, the full-scale war on the institutions of American higher education has kicked into its blitzkrieg phase. No one knows where it will end, or what will end with it. The aim, clearly, is scalar ruin. Meanwhile, we in the battered and bruised humanities suddenly find ourselves shoulder to shoulder with a lot of new-convert comrades. Friends one and all: welcome.

was anyone going to TELL ME that kahlo and o'keeffe partied together in new york, visited each other afterwards, and kahlo at least seems to have had a pretty intense crush on o'keeffe, or did i really have to find that out myself today via A FB POST
kahlo's one surviving letter to o'keeffe, currently housed at the beinecke. o'keeffe was having a quote nervous breakdown, and kahlo writes, "i can't write in english all i would like to tell, especially to you." according to one of rivera's assistants they went out at night in nyc and got drunk and wound up singing to each other in a ladies' toilet???? WHAT???? on page 2 of the letter, kahlo adds, "I thought of you a lot and never forget your wonderful hands and the color of your eyes.…i like you very much Georgia." she visited her in bermuda (?) and later told a friend they couldn't have sex bc o'keeffe was too weak??? and o'keeffe visited her in méxico later??? why am i ALWAYS the last to learn about these things???
