I say this very tentatively, I’m not in the research: the triumphalism of phonics is not universally accepted and not just by an old guard — there’s nuance and English spelling demands learning a LOT of counter technique

Obviously air travel is a pain point. States have some tools in the toolkit.

The median American takes 1 flight a year.

Any disruption of air travel is treated as a red line politically while so many other aspects of domestic policy fester without care.

nice thing about the Sacramento area is it’s an effective compromise between the SoCal botanic ecology in my heart and having big shade trees everywhere

(not that I’m a doomer now but) I was really feeling this about 13 months ago, just opti-maxing for my teen
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

Cross-posting my discovery of the day. This guy could have been the Shoup of design review.

He's was a random architect working from home in Bernal Heights. Never had a faculty position.

He churned out scores of academic papers and one great book.

one of my favorite things to complain about! so many people were just racist misogynist about her and putting words in her mouth meanwhile she’s on her netflix show helping people store their 582958 nutcracker dolls bc they bring them joy instead of saying “wow you guys are weird”
And I know people are really polarized about her (usually because they haven't actually read any of her books) but I've found Mari Kondo extremely helpful in sorting out and adjusting my attitudes toward Stuff. It's easier for me to let go of things, and to resist bringing in new things.

reminds me to snark that the Mamdani win is so inspiring one almost believes that NYC could elect a woman as mayor
Literally the one place in the country where Democrats got their clock cleaned was in the home county of state chair who refused to endorse Mamdani and has generally overseen a string very poor democratic performances.
Has New York Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs resigned over Mamdani yet? I hope he hasn't, so that he can instead resign over *improving Republican margins over Trump 2024 in an anti-Republican wave election*. Trump won Nassau by just 4%—now look at this bloodbath

1. Awesome! Love @transit.app

2. Wish this encouraged agencies to build less buffer into timetables. Sitting at a stop point means we're leaving shorter headways on the table. Timetable/delay isn't so critical when we have eta, so ditch the buffer time. Makes clockface less valuable too.

was just thinking, optimistically, that maybe tonight breaks a bit of the fever-spell-collective-psychosis by which a lot of Americans forgot that the election of the President is not the totalizing be all end all of power
Traditional American politics is premised on the notion that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win and you have to deal with that.

But Trumpism is premised on the notion that any result where you don’t win is illegitimate, unlawful, fraud, criminal.

You can’t negotiate with people like that.

Fast Metrolink (which also translates to more frequent Metrolink where single-tracking doesn't constrain) would be such a virtuous circle.

And pleased that hybrid cat-bat suggested in the report. Has made sense to amateur me as a way to trade some efficiency for flexibility on the infra side.
