True, but that data isn't all we have. We also know that the diagnosis for ADHD is easily gamed - it's not like they run a blood test or take an X-ray, you just have to know what to say to a doctor - and we know receiving that diagnosis has big benefits.

I really want people to understand that neurodivergent conditions like ADHD and autism have absolutely existed for a long ass time, and probably at the same rates as they are diagnosed now. It's just before this, Timmy was disciplined for his lack of attention until he hated school.

What this article is really about is society starting to grapple w/the idea that a whole lot more people are disabled than society thinks. Since disability is seen as horrible & a scourge, people are desperate to find some excuse - anything - instead of admitting disability is far more prevalent.
Even by the standards of The Atlantic, this is an extraordinarily weak evidence base for an article.

Do I like that freedom of speech means assholes can dehumanize others? Fuck no. As a queer disabled woman, I've been on the receiving end of some of that discrimination and dehumanization.
