I walked away from this denomination as a young adult. The pain I carry didn’t come from the world; it came from a place that promised love and didn’t live up to it. If a church wants to govern people’s lives, it should be willing to pay taxes too.

I am a strong believer in refugee resettlement. Some of my own family came here as refugees in the 1600s. But the white South Africans admitted to the US this week do not meet the legal standard of persecution that justifies refugee status. Living under Black rule is NOT persecution.

I’d much rather share pics of my dog, good food, vacations, or dumb memes. But when harmful voices are the loudest, staying quiet isn’t an option. If my post reaches no one, it still matters to me. If that means being a little louder, so be it. Ignoring what’s happening doesn’t make it go away.

Not everyone is like this, but a lot are. Loud and proud. They cheer for suffering and call it values. They drown out empathy with cruelty wrapped in flags and faith. No, we are not great. Not with this administration. I still believe in compassion and some days, that is all that gets me through.
