Slowly removing lawn, replacing with native plants. My one small step for wildlife, climate, anxiety.

Reading, learning to play the ukelele, front porch birding and nature observing. Trying to stay informed but not stressed out.
A green lacewing spent the day hanging out on the glass storm door. #insects #nature

There have not been many butterflies around my Maryland garden for the past few weeks, so I was thrilled to have this swallowtail drop by. 🌱 #nativeplants #butterflies

I saw this pretty little moth on my morning walk. iNaturalist says it’s likely a pale beauty moth. #moths #nature

Perched on the crook that holds the hummingbird feeder, the female Ruby throated hummingbird is alert for incoming competition. #birds

Wingstem flowers are brightening up the garden, but the drought has all the leaves on the 6-8 foot stems drooping down. #nativeplants 🌱

The Ruby throated hummingbird, perched on the honeysuckle vine, appears to be enjoying the morning drizzle from the protection of the porch. #birds #nativeplants

The bees and I are thankful for the late season blue mist flowers. 🌱 #nativeplants

Big, strong bumblebees can force open the tight flowers of the turtlehead plant. 🌱 #nativeplants

A race against time. The first chrysalis I have ever seen in the garden! But why did the caterpillar select a dying leaf on a dying plant?! (Nearly all of the showy goldenrod plants are dying from rust, I think.) 🌱 #nativeplants #monarch

Goldfinches like to drink from the small reservoir on top of the hummingbird feeder. Lately, chickadees and house sparrows have also decided it’s a nice spot for a sip of water. They’ve been keeping us busy refilling the tiny cup. #birds

This happy spot was mostly “planted” by nature. Fleabane arrived a few years ago, followed by black-eyed Susan, then we planted the turtlehead, and now great blue lobelia suddenly showed up. I’m picturing this spreading all along the fence row. 😃 🌱 #nativeplants

Black-eyed Susans have taken over the garden this year. I’m not sure if I should be yanking out some of them, as I don’t want a monoculture, or just let them do their thing. 🤔 Turtlehead in the foreground. 🌱 #nativeplants

Yes! Finally! 😃 🌱 #nativeplants

It won’t be long before the obedient plant flowers are gone for another year. Will the goldenrods bloom in time for the bees and butterflies to move from one to the other? 🌱 #nativeplants

The bee hotel had solitary bees earlier this summer, but now grass-carrying wasps are building nests with long, dead blades of grass. #nature #wasps

The garden is moving towards fall, but the weather is stuck in summer heat and humidity. 🌱 #birds #nativeplants

We’ve had a few black swallowtail butterflies this summer, but most often they do a brief flyover and move on. I wonder what they’re looking for. 🌱 #nativeplants #butterflies

They’ve lost their early summer beauty but still look glorious in the late summer, early morning sunshine. Parsley. Purple coneflower. 🌱 #nativeplants

For some reason, the deer neglected to drop by to eat all of the great blue lobelia just before they start to flower. And also lobelia plants have spread hither and yon around the garden. 😃 🌱 #nativeplants

There’s something about these Common Grackles that looks like they’re birds from a museum display rather than the real thing. #birds

There is still beauty in this world despite the daily distressing news. I’ve never seen a butterfly on the black-eyed Susans. 🌱 #nativeplants #butterflies

Some days it pays to pick up litter on our morning walk. ☺️

There were two monarch butterflies in the garden at the same time; a first for us. We were so excited, a neighbor noticed and asked what was going on. 🌱 #nativeplants #butterflies #maryland
