"..or Consortium space." Nori interjected. Her look was determined. "If they go aggressive on this, Vela won't be safe in alliance territory." Ross looked solemnly and Sera stared at the ground. "You really distrust the alliance don't you ... " Ross questioned Nori in a surpringly adversial tone now. "You saw the flash just now." Nori calmly answered, nodding towards the window. "Considering their policy on tech-corruption.." Ross winced at her saying it out loud " yes TECH-CORRUPTION, they call it." she really pushed it now, "Vela, or anyone involved will find themselves... researched. And, or erased for good." She mirrored the adversity Ross had started, leaving them contemplating their fate. Vela knew little about the Consortium. They were a splinter-group, an outward faction, allied but independent, residing at the galactic edge, closer to Bellente than the core-worlds. She just realised now that Nori was probably a Consortium citizen, or at least adjacent. The tattoos around her ear, the colorful pattern cloth and cut of her outfit, reminiscent of videos she had seen years ago. She couldn't help but stare, maybe to find more details, and to distract herself from the heated discussion that happened to shape her fate.

Vela getting a makeover to elude stalkers, but tbh Nori longed for a shopping trip like that for a while. This is so much harder to write than any worldbuilding, laser battle or intrigue for me ... but the contrast is needed. I even painted the outfit. #WIPsnips #writesky

Curiuosly theres not a single screen in 'Cloudgazer' so far despite it being SciFi... So heres screen from 'Chased' #WIPsnips #writesky
A red flash on the multipanel next to the slots took Limns attention, 0.3 parsec. Some older autonomous system started blurting "Collision warning". The cruiser had accelerated during the short moment of distraction. Limn grabbed the flight sticks and switched engineering control to the second multipanel, no need for far-fetched sensor data any more. She made the announcement as she tightened the straps of her pilot seat. "Attention everyone, we are being interdicted by a pirate cruiser, patrols are on the way but we have to evade for now, brace for high G maneu..." a burst of light and static electric interference interrupted her as the pirate interdiction lance hit the unshielded ferry. "Hyperspace drive failing, were loosing sync" Jesse called out over the crackling. Only the main screen above them was working and showed the current realspace readings, a planet with a moon, a faraway G-class star. Limn gripped the sticks firmly, feeling the mounting vibration from the ships hull rasping through the border of the hyperlane, unassisted by any gate or hyperdrive. It should withstand this but it felt rough. She stayed fixated on the main screen for now, pixels manifesting their ships course as it shifted from an unsharp cone to a more certain dotted line.

The world in 'Cloudgazer' and my other works is quite advanced. Galaxy spanning civs, advanced AIs, hyperspace travel, devestating wars. There are differences in the factions though. Some had banished AIs, some don't use hyperspace. Then there are ruins of even more advanced civs. Unknown and gone.

"What are you suddenly talking about ?" Ross interjected, looking at Nori and Vela, then to Sera, who looked intrigued but not surprised. "cursed cube.. I knew it. Did you mess with it ??" Sera spouted. Ross clasped hands over face "Oh no.. " realizing the gravity of the situation. Every pupil learned about tech corruption, about biological dangers and other threats. The alliance took these things seriously. It was the stuff of fleet-gossip. Did you hear ? Ship so-and-so was sacked after THE incident. They picked up some eggs on an asteroid and woosh. Did they really let in that entity that knocked on the airlock in hyperspace ? Hah fools. Now an actual incident sat behind him in this very skimmer, fighting tears. The train of thought was visible on his ex-marine type face as he looked back again. Vela could see that Ross was fighting with himself, oath versus here-and-now. The others probably had made up their mind at this point, these expeditions didn't really attract the fanatic pro-AI city-dwellers.

The fateful encounter ... #WIPsnips #writesky
She hadn't even thought of bringing a torch. A sudden sharp pain. She had hit something with her right hand. A rock ? No, a cube rather. Her hand recoiled in pain and scare. That would leave a mark, maybe a bruise. The cube didn't look like it belonged. The very fine lines of greenish light dazzling on its sides, barely visible for Vela, she adjusted her glasses to get a better look but no avail. Maybe a photo would help, she remembered that the smart ledger had a camera, like most smart-things did. She dragged it out of the backpack and flicked through it's pages for the programm. Its camera was positioned on the backside of the hefty book so adjusting it to the right angle took some akward fidgeting, good that no one watched this embarrassing dance of ancient user experience. Content with at least one of the pictures Vela considered her options. Just leaving it be or maybe ask the group ? Or even the ship ? She had no idea what the cube was or where it came from, only that it didn’t belong and not look like anything they, the alliance had in use, wrong colours, no text, no number etc. She barely remembered that there were other species with their respective technology. They had that in school, but she only recalled some beings with more crystalline like technology, definitely not like the thing here. Maybe the geologists knew more, the thing was under the surface after all, she never direct messaged them before though so putting it in the group seemed like the least dramatic option.

Vela likes to drive a dirtbike. In space obviously spaceships, but only as passenger. She can also steer hovercars etc, but prefers open vehicles.

Belle likes the ground below her feet. She never got a mech because shes too tall. But in space she flies an assault gunship.

Vela always carries her smart-ledger in a bag. It's unwieldy but very dear to her. It contains all her data and much more stuff she discovers later in 'Cloudgazer'.

Belle always carries her custom milled Blaster. It is modular, and she can carry the parts in secret if need be.

Finishing touches on the formatting of the 'Chased' pdf... just how do you stop Latex from adding these mysterious spaces... theres nothing in the code that indicates a space. It appears wether I have that line in the code or not. But it dispappears when I add a section (I dont want). 🫠 #writesky

As their grunting subsided in the stairwell Nori handed Vela the VR headset from the nightstand and beckoned her to put it on. - It's on subvocal, with laser, can't be eavesdropped - her distorted voice sounded in Velas ear. She nodded. Nori knew. - We don't have long. I've scrapped the scanner results. One of the pills is a strong suppressor, military grade. But ultimately it can't stop whats happening to you. There's some sort of tech stuff, other than the nanites in you. Im no engineer, but I'm sure you are aware ? - Vela nodded slowly, looking to the floor. "How long ?" she asked in a low voice, barely a whisper. - The suppressor will hold for maybe 10 days. After that I don't know - She was curt and honest, totally changed from the affirming voice earlier with the team. This was serious. - The team can be trusted, the AI, not so much with this, I'm sure you’re aware of that. I'll leave the decision to you. There will be an opportunity to talk undisturbed later. - with these closing words Nori lifted the headset from Velas head in a swift fluent motion and stowed it in the depths of her pack.

"So, Vela, why do you think the ship will displace something ?" Ross asked, looking Vela firmly in the eyes. She immediately crumbled under the intense attention and sort of stammered. "The... the ship said I need to place a beacon for displacement, of the rescue pod... Big orange sphere. I had the drone carry it.. and it was" she swallowed "dragged into the cave, with the beacon." she whispered "And I ran away." Ross gently touched her shoulder, it felt as if she was covered in pins and needles."That is good, I'm happy you did that. Okay ? Are you still with me ?" he asked, definitely noticing how the attention had overloaded her after all what happened today. "Yes .." Vela whispered, and shoved his hand away firmly, that was too much right now. "Our ship definitely has no displacer. Displacers are huge subsystems, much larger than our whole ship, only the biggest ships have these, like supercarriers." Ross laid it out so clearly. Vela never cared about that military stuff. The realization hung in the deck like a looming cloud. Vela felt a deep sting in her stomach. Was she stupid for even going out there ? Were really people aboard ? Did the ship know that she didn't know ? The pain welled up through her chest to her face. She was fighting the tears, with a reddened face, staring into the emptiness before her.
