Around 80% of children at KEEN are non-speaking but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a voice.

At KEEN, we view autism as a different way of seeing the world rather than as a disorder. 90% of the athletes we support have autism so a KEEN session is more than acceptance and awareness, it’s a celebration of what makes us all different.

We’re supporting world autism acceptance month

Did you know

More than one in 100 children in the UK are autistic.

Autism can affect communication, relationships, social skills, and self-regulation.

Boys are more commonly diagnosed than girls. Signs of autism can look different in girls, so it’s more easily missed or misdiagnosed.

Autism is not a learning disability or a mental health condition

Making comms ovation accessible

* Slow down It can be overwhelming if you speak too quickly.

* Be patient and take time to listen people with autism may need longer to process what you’ve said and respond. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t listening or that they don’t understand.

* Say what you mean. Many people with autism think literally, so it may be helpful to avoid slang, idioms, and sarcasm.

* Be adaptable and remember that speaking is only one way of communicating. Up to 30% of autistic children are non-speaking and may communicate through other ways, like gestures, eye contact, actions, or sign language.
