Retaliation can be such fun! But this will have limited impact because so few U.S.-flag vessels survive in international shipping. China’s retaliation will be more important to foreign shipping lines with substantial U.S. ownership. Don’t think this was what the tyrant intended with his port fees.

China has hit American-owned vessels docking in the country with tit-for-tat port fees. The announcement was made by China's Ministry of Transport on Friday.

Krugman makes a great point that Trump’s tariffs encourage importers to avoid or evade them. All his exceptions and special favors make that easier. And pulling CBP off for immigration raids means there are fewer experienced agents who know what they are seeing when they check customs invoices.

USA Today pretty much ignores Trump’s tariffs. The main U.S. suppliers of cocoa and cocoa products are Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic and Ghana. All of them received so-called "reciprocal" tariffs, ranging from 15% to 25%. Might have a bit to do with the price of chocolate.

Trumpian tariffs may still break the US consumer. So far, we can thank a disjointed roll out, multiple TACOs, payoffs for special favors for keeping prices within reason. I am disappointed there hasn’t been more retaliation. Without it, the orange mob boss will come back for more.

I think Carney is smart enough not to trust Trump. The orange tyrant will break any agreement he makes as soon as that becomes convenient. My country’s negotiators, and I used to be one, cannot be trusted as long as the Trump regime remains in power.

I enjoy Malaysia and have been impressed with its economic development since my first business visit to KL in 1979. Kuala Lumpur is a bit sterile as capitals go. I recommend visiting much smaller and more historic Malacca. But KL is where the business is.
