And that’s a wrap on my time in France!

Not pictured: all the delicious food, wine, and even a Kir Royale or two.

Many thanks to everyone who shared their recommendations with me—we tried to hit as many of them as we could!

We also took a cable car up to see the Grenoble Bastille, a 16th century fortress.

One of the flags flying over the Bastille features dolphins, as Grenoble was historically part of the Dauphiné, a region related to the Dauphin (heir to the throne of France).

From the top you can see Mont Blanc

Our friends took us on an outing to Lake Paladru.

In addition to beautiful views, we stopped by the nearby archeological museum, with exhibits about the Neolithic and medieval settlements near the lake.

From Paris, we took a train to Grenoble (in the French Alps) to visit friends.

Fun fact: Grenoble is near the Chartreuse Mountains, which houses the main monastery of the Carthusian order (again, the monks that make the liqueur).

Grenoble also hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics.

Some scenes from my last day in Paris (last Friday):

The Musée de Cluny, and then a walking tour of the former site of Chartreuse Paris-vauvert (yes, those are the monks that make the liqueur; they have a tasting room in Paris) near Luxembourg Palace

Also worthy of note: Château d'Angers houses the 14th century Apocalypse Tapestry (totally worth looking up) in a purpose built gallery.

I did not get pictures because I was too busy looking at the many, many fragments; instead here is one last shot of the chateau (at night) from across the way.

They let you walk most of the (very tall) walls—even in the rain!

While today’s previous chateaux look more like fancy houses, this one started out as a proper fortification.

Final castle for today: Château d'Angers

There are also gardens, more gardens, a donkey farm, etc.

But one more pano of the Chenonceau bridge setup

And if you have a chance, check out its history, as it involved at least one mistress to a king of France (Diane de Poitiers) and also Catherine de' Medici

But the money shot is when you see the chateau from the side, with the medieval keep, bridge over the moat to the front door, and gallery built on a bridge that spans almost the entire river.

Before I forget, the interior is worth seeing: lavishly furnished with paintings and tapestries, and from some windows you can see the River Cher directly below

I had seen this chateau on screen (in The Serpent Queen IIRC), but I was not prepared for how Brothers Grimm it would feel before opening up to neoclassical geometric gardens. Check out this approach

up next: Chenonceau

or, the chateau on a bridge

There are addition spiral staircases on the exterior, including the summit of the internal staircase, shown here from “the terraces” on the roof.
