10 years ago today we lost an American music great. I had the pleasure of seeing BB King perform 3 times, for which I am so grateful. He was sparked my love of the Blues and it was THIS version of THIS song that did it for me. Rest in Peace, Mr. Riley B. King.

Damn!
As a scholar, as a teacher, and now as a museum educator, Chronicling America has been invaluable.

Beyond that, though, it's OURS. We paid for it. It's a public good.
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down

Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

-defense making us more vulnerable to attacks
-homeland security making us feel less secure than ever
-health and human services trying to spread illness

everything’s fine.

There's a list in here of the kinds of topics that people might cry "revisionist history!" about and they've nearly all been the subject of an EO at this point. I'm not claiming to be some visionary, just that this was all pretty clearly where these folks wanted to go, even in 2019.
"It’s not that historians are distorting the past to make a point about the present. The discomfort comes from the fact that historians are often disrupting or destroying connections people have already made between the past and the present, connections that may be based on no evidence at all."

Sending a Russian dissent back to Russia to be tortured and/or killed perfectly encapsulates this loathsome administration’s lack of American values.
Kseniia Petrova, a Russian scientist at Harvard Medical School, was detained at Logan Airport after returning from France and sent to an ICE detention in Louisiana, The Insider reports.

A big critic of Putin and the war in Ukraine, she may now be deported to Russia.

Historian of Reconstruction and I approve of this message!
The Department of Justice was created in 1870 with an explicit mission to protect civil rights and enforce the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments.

The DOJ went after the Klan hard, securing thousands of indictments and 600+ convictions within the first year alone.

How about restoring *that* focus?
Leavitt: "We want to restore the Department of Justice to an institution that focuses on fighting law and order."

I'm seeing reactions that "this is all a distraction!" but no, this is a pretty good illustration of Trump's authoritarian turn and a nice way to break through to normal folks who think he's doing normal things.
“Obama thinks he’s king!” was a pretty powerful rallying cry in the Tea Party revolts of 2009-2010 and that was, you know, WITHOUT HIS WHITE HOUSE LITERALLY DEPICTING HIM AS A KING
