On Lennon’s birthday, surely one of the best pop songs of all time. Certainly one of my favourites! The track transcends the man imo - by examining his own nostalgia, he touches something universal. youtu.be/HtUH9z_Oey8?...

It’s in the collection Dark Tales - there’s a big emphasis on a suitcase too, so Gustav would approve. Cool - The Hospice is in Cold Hand In Mine, which is actually the one I’ve picked up!

Only a handful of stories left. I have this feeling that I’m in extremely competent hands. Certain stories - ‘Louisa, Please Come Home’, ‘Jack the Ripper’, ‘The Bus’ - are particularly memorable and deft. Quality

I was reading Shirley Jackson’s story ‘The Bus’ today and I thought it’d be up your alley, as it had a real Unconsoled vibe. I’ve been meaning to read some Aickman for a while!

I’m not a massive fan of all the episodes being on iPlayer at once. I watched three in one day and now feel a bit full.

Love that BBC Sounds advert for Wayne Rooney’s podcast which ends ‘it’s what everyone’s talking about’. You can’t move for people talking about the Wayne Rooney podcast.

Alan Partridge means time with my dad. Went over today and we put on the first episode of the new series. This was my favourite joke. Long live Pear Tree Productions. 🌳

Saturday morning reading. Loving this by @theprofrog.bsky.social. Onto the Greek Necropolis now. Such a beautifully written and presented book. ‘To be human… is to be defined by rituals in remembrance of the dead.’

FACT OF THE DAY. 2 October 1925. John Logie Baird, a Scottish engineer and inventor, performed the 1st test of a working TV system in his London lab where he successfully transmitted the 1st TV picture which was a greyscale image of the head of a ventriloquist’s dummy.

I was listening to the Ratatouille soundtrack at my desk one afternoon and the same thing happened. Très embarrassing.

Been on a real The Beths kick since the release of their latest album. I think for me Expert in a Dying Field is still their best overall, but the title track for Straight Line Was a Lie is also brilliant. Quality! youtu.be/vU0Q8DKWhQk?...

Finished. I mean, no one needs my review of The Exorcist. But! I found it a very powerful, albeit uneven, novel. Dropped a tear - not ashamed to say - and any book that gives you goosebumps is surely doing something well.

Picked up the new McEwan at lunch. When I heard about it, I thought the world sounded close to Private Rites by Julia Armfield, but looks like it’s trying to do something different. But still - rising sea levels/lots of rain. Looking forward to starting.
