You can usually sniff these teachers out by looking at their syllabus or attending the first class and usually dropping without penalty is an option. Recognizable by having an a persistent antagonistic or persecution complex attitude, for example. Or seeing a rather hostile sick/bereavement policy

Essay and other show your work questions are harder to brute force, but often times, giving some effort, even if it leads to a wrong answer is enough to get partial credit, at least a single point

Unless your teacher is a gatekeeper cop who sees it as their duty to fail "undeserving" students

Even if you were completely unprepared and had to guess on every question, the odds of getting a big ol' goose egg final grade is a statistical wonder... unless you left the questions you didn't know blank

Another question may later jog your memory. If that still isn't the case, *just guess* Assuming 5 possible answers even if you cannot eliminate any you still have a 20% chance of getting the right answer. If you can eliminate one, your odds increase to 25%, if you can eliminate 2, 33%, and 4, 50%

If you know the answer to a question of course bubble it in. If you can eliminate any answers you know immediately are false, you can cross those out and perhaps stumble on the correct answer by elimination. If you still aren't sure *skip* and come back to it later

Also on the topic of exams, unless you have a miserable gatekeeper cop as a teacher they will always have at least some portion of the exam multiple choice scantron, because any other exam format takes a lot of time to grade

Basically at the beginning of a course look at how the grades are allocated and look for exploits or at least where to weight your effort and attention

I have taken a course where I did flunk the midterm but for some unknown reason the teacher gave the midterm so little weight it did not matter

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

They know what Trump is. They know what the Occupation is. They live under Occupation every day. We're not doing them any favors telling them what they already know.

And then of course this starts turning into calls for "safety"; that of course the police should stop people (of a certain skin color) that look like they don't belong in certain areas. It's because a woman feels "unsafe"

In both TGOF and true crime ("stay sexy, don't get murdered") there's the comforting narrative that dangerous people that are likely to kill you look and behave a particular way and that thus it's possible to recognize them and keep yourself safe

Which leads to the second problem, the desire to provide the perception of safety and illusion by placing the danger on outsiders and marginalized populations. By no means a new one; as the widespread horror of racial lynching throughout the US was this as well

Vulnerable people, especially women, are subjected to horrible abuse, violence and death at alarming levels by romantic partners and family

These are structures and systems that society often provides little safety or means of escape from

It's actually two problems that are deeply intertwined; one, and crucially, society is not willing to acknowledge that patriarchal relationships and the nuclear family as a structure are deeply flawed and enable abuse, assault and death

Seeing reactions to the Ed Gein piece and as usual, "true crime" as a genre continues to be a deeply evil and reactionary element of popular culture that escapes any sort of critique

I wanted to like zoologist's stuff because the packaging is neat and they had a bunch of insect themed fragrances but they've all smelled horrendous on my skin
