(And as much as I played up how I suggest "teenager-friendly" topics like dress codes before, I have multiple students who are pregnant right now - one with her second child - so this isn't some abstract issue for them to be sheltered from.)

(We talk about the trade-offs of 'Gale vs. Google' and I am always very frank about how the search algorithm is much more limited [because they're not also serving up ads, etc, etc]. This is some next-level shit, though.)

(Besides the obvious, one of the skills I always try to teach my students when we are using these databases is to keep their search terms very concise to start and then only add what they need to narrow down the results to something manageable.)

(It's interesting, though, because she was still able to get results when she clicked on "Abortion Rights," but I got the same error that I had for plain old, "Abortion," when I tried that. Even if that had worked, it would still be ridiculous on multiple levels.)

(I just made a donation to Fund Texas Choice yesterday for Giving Tuesday, but I went ahead and made another today because fuck this shit. I was going to try to set up a [smaller] recurring donation, but I didn't see that option, so 🤷‍♀️.)

(It needed to be debatable - per the curriculum - so that they could use a mix of informational & argumentative sources, including at least 1 from a different perspective; but I also make it clear that "debatable" doesn't have to mean "controversial," & bring up examples like college/trade school.)

(And just in case anybody is wondering- the students had a ton of latitude in choosing their own topics for their current research unit. I try not to assign topics to students so that they feel a sense of ownership. If they ask for ideas, I lean towards school stuff like dress code, start time.)
