A wide view of Ullswater, England's second largest lake in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. It is near the northern end of the lake looking south. On a cloudy but bright November day. The steel grey lake is calm with a subtle reflection of the bright blue sky and white clouds. In the far distance is the outline of some of the Eastern Fells, including Helvellyn. I was stood shin deep in very, very cold water for this one as I'd forgotten my wellies.

A photo taken looking down a jetty towards the centre of a lake and the opposite shoreline. The water level is so deep that the deck boards are covered by the water. The water has been smoothed over with the use of a long exposure which gives it a milky appearance. closer to the camera the deck boards are visible. The posts of the jetty stand clear of the water and seem to converge in the distance. A sign hang from the first posts and it says that the pier is closed for repair. On the horizon a cloud is little up by the sun casting orange light on the water of the lake towards the camera.

An autumnal view of Talkin Tarn, Talkin Tarn Country Park, Brampton, Cumbria on a bright December day. Looking from the path by the shore across the calm waters of the tarn to the trees in the distance on the opposite shore. In the middle of the picture a fallen tree rests in the shallow blue waters of the tarn. There are ducks stood on the tree trunk and some in the water close to the tree. The sky above is bright blue. It is reflected in the still waters of the tarn, as is the fallen tree. There are a few light ripples on the water, some from the movement of the ducks. Talkin Tarn is a kettle-hole lake formed by the immense force of glaciers 18,000 years ago. Moving ice scoured and carved the landscape leaving glacial sand hills and a natural bowl, which filled with water as the ice sheet melted. The name Talkin is derived from the Celtic 'Talcan' meaning brow of a hill. The word 'Tarn' is Norse in origin, 'Tjorn' meaning tear drop or small lake.
