mafuyu's entire thing is that they *don't* know what they desire for themself, that they've been told what to think for so long that they no longer know who they are. it's not an environment that would be conducive to self-discovery before the beginning of the story

a lot of it is down to mafuyu's mom projecting an idealized version of herself onto them, telling them what to think and feel and so on, because she was pressured to marry and have a kid young and wasn't able to be her own person... so she unintentionally prevents mafuyu from being their own person

i think it's so funny how this is one of two hairstyles where mafuyu's face Doesn't have a shadow cast over it (the other being the nurse one, which, well, that's something else they want to become!)
