We find: NCP assessments could miss large impacts to values by ignoring disturbances (results below - e.g. risks of up to 50% losses) -- and common ecological metrics of stability fall short of predicting these impacts -- especially when considering dynamic human responses to disturbance.

We demonstrate our approach quantifying impacts to timber and recreational enjoyment from extreme windstorms in a mid-latitude forest of Northern Minnesota. But provide a roadmap for applying our approach across different social-ecological systems, eg. 👇

To address our questions, our interdisciplinary team of ecologists and economist developed a new approach that formalizes what's in this figure 👇 & integrate knowledge from disturbance ecology and from approaches that value ecosystems in economic and cultural terms.

The review process, which was excellent, prompted us to call for community-driven best practices in causal inference in ecology. We put some ideas in Box 4 to kick off that discussion. Curious what others think or would add! @jebyrnes.bsky.social @rmcelreath.bsky.social @juliajones.bsky.social

Wildlife contributes to human well-being and values in visible and invisible ways that are under-recognized or dominated by conflict narratives. We review these critical contributions and what research and policy is needed to protect them: www.nature.com/articles/s44...

4) there a plenty of misconceptions with causal inference that often arise; we address a few in Box 5. Looking forward, we provide a workflow to aid in choosing among different designs given goals, assumptions, and datasets. 5/n

Foundations and future directions for causal inference in ecological research, forthcoming w/ @katherinesiegel.bsky.social: tinyurl.com/4mm57zzd.
We wrote it based on our experience teaching causal inference to ecologists w/ some stuff we wish other papers had reviewed to share w/ the students
