Excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: Vivee orbits the ballroom holding a tray of crystal glasses filled with golden apple wine. When she drifts near, she offers one to Ness and whispers from the corner of her mouth, “Trouble, three o’clock.” Ness selects a drink and shifts slightly, not too much as to draw attention, but enough for her to cast a careless glance in that direction. Nobles, more nobles, the dessert buffet, nobles again, and—Melirin. Shit.

Not that anyone would blame her if she did. Melirin is breathtaking with a sword in her hands, her white shirt clinging to her muscles, and her black braid whipping through the air when she spins away. “Ready to give up?” Melirin asks, toying with her by hovering just out of reach. “Aww, if you’re too tired to keep going, you can admit it. I thought you’d have more stamina, but—”

Excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: “You have to try this.” He holds the bowl out to her in offering, and her heart swells at the simple kindness. “Only if you accept a dumpling in return.” “Deal. Mel, you want in on this?” “Sure.” She nudges her bowl of beef stew between them. Ness widens her eyes. It’s strangely intimate to eat each other’s food. If someone had told her a week ago that she’d be sharing food with a prince and her nemesis, she would’ve told them to cut back on the wine. But as they trade bites of their dishes, she can’t deny the air of affection surrounding them. It’s strange but also nice.

Excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: Prince Sathias, heir to the Heskann throne, stands beside the dessert buffet with a sugary confection in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. He’s wearing a sleek black coat that hangs to his thighs in the front and floats in a long trail behind him, and though she knows almost nothing about the man, she gets the distinct impression that he’s the type of person who enjoys loose clothing specifically because it can make any movement more dramatic: the flare of a cape around a corner, a twirl of a skirt, or the flutter of a robe. With a snowy white shirt open at the throat partnered with exquisitely fitted trousers and knee-high boots, he looks less like the prince she’d imagined and more like a fashionable pirate.

An excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: As the train official trails off, Ness rises and casts a furtive glance in their direction. The sleeve of one of the passenger’s shirts has fallen to their elbow, revealing a tattoo of a black dagger, its outline glowing like an ember amongst coal. Whoever this person is, they’re seconds away from summoning the blade from their skin. The hairs on Ness’ nape stand on end. She’s heard of the tavere—ink mages trained in the complex art of transmuting body ink—but she has no desire to see this one in action. Besides, Melirin might catch up to her at any moment.

An excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: Ness’ mouth goes dry, and she struggles to swallow. Enticing a cat is one thing—getting caught in one’s claws is not what she had in mind. What is taking Britha so long? Ness’ throat tightens. She reaches for a dagger with her free hand, but she isn’t fast enough, as Melirin swiftly captures her wrist and backs her up against the wall, pinning her arms above her head on either side. “Someone’s eager,” Ness mutters under her breath. It’s not one of her best quips, but in her defense, she’s used to tossing them over her shoulder as she escapes.

excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: “Instead of predicting worst-case scenarios, what if you imagined what could go right?” Ness falters, opening and closing her mouth, but words fail her. How can she explain that it isn’t that simple? There’s a twisted sense of comfort in negative hypotheticals. If she can think through all the ways something can go wrong, she’ll be more prepared to face them. Ignoring them in favor of hopeful what ifs will only set her up for disappointment if they don’t come to pass.

Excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: Neither of them moves, and Ness’ breath catches as the heat of Melirin’s hand seeps through her shirt and floods her skin. Her body, the horny traitor, strains forward, begging for the spy to draw a thumb across her already hardening nipple. Or at least give the other breast some attention too, in the name of symmetry. Melirin’s eyes widen, and for half a second, Ness thinks she might have said that last thought out loud, but then she lets go, her hands forming fists. Shaking herself from her desire-laden stupor, Ness leaps up and dashes for the exit.

Did she do something wrong? She starts to run through their most recent conversation in her head, looking for what she could’ve done differently, but then stops herself. Such thinking will only increase her anxiety.
